I have just returned from The Red Sea where i finished my Open Water course and am totally hooked! I have the basic kit (wet suit, masks, fins, etc.) but now want to begin investing in the rest of the equipment. At the top of my list is a first and second stage. I don't want to spend huge amounts but would appreciate any thoughts on what might suit. Most of my diving will be in warmer waters although i might brave the cold waters of England!!

Apeks ATX50 + ATX40 + DS4 is an awesome reg at a great price. Bombproof, dry sealed first stage, cold water capable second stages. You can buy the set for under 300 pounds at www.scubastore.com (located in Spain).

Not only that, but if he/she is British then he/she should be buying local, n'est pas?

Not to mention that Apeks is one of the two top names in regs.

I would agree that the apeks is the best reg you can get. And i dive the same set mentioned above. However, if you are looking to save a little and not compromise quality, a sherwood reg is a good way to go. they are built really tough and are really reliable. I don't know how easy they are to service in your next of the woods but I do know that they are a bit cheaper that the apeks.

Another great source for Apeks is www.simplyscuba.com, which is based in the UK.

Oceanic makes some great breathing sealed regs too. And below 100', Sherwood regs are very reliable.

I agree that oceanic makes some pretty slick regs like the delta. However, when most people can buy an apeks for the same price as a delta/DX4 combo they opt for the apeks.

Thank you for you replies. I have been to my LDS and spoken to them a length about what i need. They also managed to sell the Advanced Open Water Course to me (didn't take much convincing!!). They have suggested a Mares MR12 reg and first stage at just over £100 (UK) They will give me a warranty and are authorised to service the parts. I was very impressed with the service and think that counts for a lot. What are your thoughts on the Mares MR12?

The MR12 is Mares' entry level first stage. Do you know which 2nd stage they're trying to sell you?

IMO, there is no such thing as a "regulator for a new diver". A reg is the essential life supporting piece of equipment you need for diving. I would not buy an entry-level reg, let alone a Mares.

I see that Dive Inn is running a special on DS4+ATX50+ATX50 for £293. I'm sure you can also find some local dealers.

The Mares package on Dive Inn says it is called Mares MR12 Axis. Arnaud, i have looked on Dive Inn and cannot find what you suggested. What seems to make Apex so good. Reading this board I would appear most people swear by them!
