Looking for opinions on a good setup for someone on a budget.

I hate to do this to you, but have a quick look at some of the recent threads here on getting a new system - there have been at least four in the past two weeks and I've noticed that we keep saying the same things

Also, tell us more about the type of diving you do, how many dives a year you do, how much photo experience you have, if you already have a camera & what it is, if you have your eye on any...all of that will help those with info to offer some insight.

You can also check www.dpreview.com and compare models side by side if you have a few in mind. They also have very good reviews on various models.

Hope this helps! I don't want to fob you off so ask away!!

The SEA & SEA DX-750G 5.1 MEGAPIXEL UNDERWATER CAMERA AND HOUSING, with accessories is going for under 500 bucks on Scuba.com (and they are offering a special 10% off thingy for the holidays).

One thing to consider is looking at used gear.

I just bought this set up today, looking forward too see how it does. I also got the strobe and wide angle lense, I believe the whole set up cost around 1000.00. Looking forward too trying this out soon.

I just ordered the Sea & Sea 750 as well, from Scubatoys of course. Didn't think we needed the strobe or wide angle lens yet, as my wife takes the pictures I spend to much time looking, can't multitask, oh well.

I ordered a Canon A620 from Dell a few weeks ago and then cancelled the order because they pushed the delivery day to 1/4/05. I ordered the camera from another place and received it in 3 days along with the housing. I just received an email from DEll saying they had shipped the camera on Thursday even though I had cancelled the order. I paid roughly $300 for it including tax. You can have it for that much plus shipping if you or any body else is interested. I will return it to Dell as soon as I get it and loose the shipping charges if no body here wants it. I think it's a good deal considering the going price is about $399 plus shipping. The housing for this camera is about $160. If anybody is interested send me a private message with a phone number and I'll call back.

Alcina, you're right! So I'll say something different:

I would also advise looking at a used Nikonos. The optics are still the best. It's easy to learn. I think the biggest problem for beginning photographers was that they used the wrong lens (35 or 28). If you go for a lens like the 20, focusing is super easy. You have to get close to the subject, but the 20 is easier to use than the 15.

Right now there is superb equipment going for pennies on the dollar. On eBay you can find:

Nikonos V camera $250
20mm Nikkor UW lens $300
Viewfinder $100
Strobe (lots of choices!) $100-$300

buoy...the "deal" at scuba.com isn't really that good of a deal. there are better options out there. personally i think that they are overpriced...and they play games when "matching" prices. still, sometimes it's a must-do because they are local, and it isn't worth waiting 3-5 days for something to arrive...
