I have to do my 100 meter tote (for my DM class). What is the best method/way of doing this? We will both be in full gear. I have a choice of doing it in a pool or a lake. Should I just grab the tank and take off? Underarm? It's timed, so speed is what's important here. Suggestions??

If I remember correctly this is done with a conscious diver, right?

Lake if you can. Making the turns in the pool increases your time.

The fin push is most efficient, in my opinion. That's what I used and beat the heck out of all the young studs in my class (but then I was wearing a BP/W and had switched to my wife "Blades" and used her itty bitty E7-80)

I always grab the tank. I think you can get better efficiency by pushing their feet, but have much better control by pulling the tank.

Although it's probably not relevant for your test, it's extremely difficult for a panicing diver to harass you when you're behind them holding the tank valve.

What's the timing part? Do you just need to finish in a reasonable amount of time, or is it a significant constraint?

Fin push. I have timed students doing both and the fin push is always much faster. I second the lake vote by The Kraken. The pool takes way too much time and energy.

I have to get the best time I can. It's not a rescue thing. It's to see how I swim against resistance. The better the time, the more points I get. I'll try the fin push first.

In regards to fins..... I have lots of fins. What kinds do you suggest. I don't think any of my splits would be the fastest. Other than split fins, I have Genesis Response. Think these will be ok? I can always borrow someone's if needed.

Fins are important. The split fins are CRAP (here comes a new thread!).
Split fins are ok for slow doodeling around a reef. You should wear a nice rigid fin to get the most out of you leg stroke. I prefer full foot pocket as you get the most energy transfer from your foot to fin blade. But, we're splitting hairs now...

Don't worry about the time. Just get it done. Most DM candidates are able to get a passing score with 4 of the 5 timed tests. You still have to do the 5th one, but it doesn't matter what that score is. Relax and have fun.

Like everyone said, try and do it in a straight line if possible. I earned a 3 on that one using the tank tow in a 25m pool...the turns are a time killer.

I did it in a lake with the fin push. I used split fins and earned a score of 4. Also, I used my reg instead of snorkle. Kept my face down and looked up a few times to make sure I was going straight. For me, this was not the hardest of the stamina tests. If you use the split fins, short rapid kicks work better that larger kicks.

Loop a buddy line around the victim's tank valve and tow him behind you with that. You can put your head down and move on out with your arm hanging back. If you don't have a buddy line, make one and keep it in your BC pocket at all times. In a pinch, you can tow them by a regulator hose (not recommended in practice, but in a real rescue, go for it.) Much more efficient than the foot push which is a MUCH better choice than grabbing the tank valve (such a bad choice everyone should stop teaching it).
