I'm home again.

I have two lives.

One of them plays out in the trenches of project management on big projects with big budgets, big egos and big problems and if everything goes well, big results.

The other plays out underwater, where I'm a scuba instructor and diver whose commitment to the sport is something I really want to "pay forward" in order to honour all of my own instructors who have had such a big influence on my life and have given me the best hobby on earth and a fantastic group of friends to share it with.

In one of my lives, I listen a lot, I talk a lot, I lead people and I fight for the interests of my client. For anyone who does this work, you'll know that what we do is manage chronic stress with periods of acute stress. There's always stress.

In my other life, I just do. I just go underwater and breathe. Some days, like today I get into a zone of such complete relaxation during a dive that I hardly move at all, the only thing you'll see on me is just a little flicking of the ankles..... and the stress level drops to zero. Today's dive was just showing some divers around one of my favorite underwater places in the Netherlands but it doesn't matter if I'm doing this or diving with a truck load of gear on what most people would consider a pretty complicated dive... the stress just washes out of my body as soon as I hit the water.

Best.... Hobby.... Ever!

My two lives, compliment each other nicely. Diving allows me to clear my head so I can be a more effective project manager and without my day job I couldn't afford to be scuba instructor (LOL... this is only 1/2 a joke ;) ).

So I'm back home again. I was giving lessons last night until about 11pm and I spent all day today with clients of the shop and I feel completely relaxed and satisfied with life. Tomorrow I do it all over again and on Monday I'll be back at work having had a fantastic weekend.

Not an instructor but I know exactly how you feel. Even with all the gear required for diving 8-15 degree C water I feel like the stresses of my life float away when I descend.
