Friends love St. Croix in the USVI. Both shore and boat diving.
 
My 2 psi, just stomach the longer flight, and fly to the Phillipines. You will find the overall cost is about the same, but completely different critters and corals. The draw to the Carribean is its proximity, which I understand and take advantage of. But the diving in Indonesia is much better with more life.

Haha. You know, I typed that answer rather vaguely, realized it, then since I posted it I let it go. I guess my mindset was to point to the general geographical area. So to clarify my response....Diving in Southeast Asia is much better with more life. Thanks for the correction!
