Being pushed into buying gear - Is this normal?

In all seriousness, learning for someone who genuinely enjoys diving, and wants other people to enjoy it too, is worth shopping around a little bit.
 
Yeah, don't bother with these people. If they are trying to force anything to you just walking into the store, imagine how they'll be when they know you rely on them anywhere else.

However, I would recommend your own mask and snorkel at the least. Fins are not too important right now but would definitely help you be more comfortable. This way you have a good fitting mask and you're not sharing a snorkel... doesn't sound appealing to me anyway. Remember if you cant breathe in with the mask on through your nose and have it stick to your face, it's the wrong size.
