I have been diving now for almost two years, and I have been following the course of PADI instruction. Having recently completed the rescue diver, I am considering going on to Divemaster. Maybe some of the instructors and Divemaster on the forums could give some insight as to the advantages to completing this phase of training. I enjoy recreational diving, and I love the sport of diving including the science and knowing all I can about it. I would like to know if that would be a worthy place to invest in my diving career.

thinking back on it (it was a very long time ago) it was one of the most useless certs I ever got.
the only reason I would do it today is, if I plan to become an instructor.
other than becoming an instructor there are much more useful courses out here that will further your knowledge when it comes to diving.

take a DIR-F, a cave class, advanced nitrox, trimix etc. and you'll really further your knowledge about diving even if you never intend to use it, it still will make you a much better diver.
just MHO.

I think DATA is on the money.

DM is a pro cert and equips you to work with guests who are certified divers or to assist an Instructor with training. Unless the pro track is where you are going I'd recomend kicking up your skills with DIR-F or expanding your range of dive environements with Tech/Cave training. You could also pick up something like photography or video which is amazing and wich will give you another way to look at your diving.

With all that said... DM is worthy especially if you intend to go pro.

I'm kinda agreeing with the others. If you want a job in the resort industry as a divemaster, you need to be an OWSI and have your captains license. If you want a job in the resort industry as an instructor, you need to be an MSDT. There are so many of us who worked our 40 hour a week job for 20 years and then quit to live the "good life:lol: " of schleping tanks...

I completely agree with you it was a waste of money. I would have to say become a Divemaster only if you plan on becoming an Instructor. Use the Divemaster as sought of a holding area until you become an Instructor. Being a Divemaster is expensive. If you have any interests like trimix or any type of tech training complete that first. My DM course cost me nearly $1000 and did absolutley nothing for me, the only thing I can say is I'm a Divemaster, big deal....The course that helped me out the most is the Cavern course.

Here is a PRO DM voice - I don't know that I ever want to be an instructor. It's just not me. I have learned so much while taking the DM class (which I will be done this saturday I might add YAY!!) not just book material which there was alot of, but I have learned alot about myself too and have different priorities now than I did before the class. Xbox playin, Tv watching, Nap craver about summed it up. Now I walk 2.5 mi/day plus weight train, very rarely watch tv, haven't even touched the Xbox since staring the DM Class. It has been expensive $688 class/books + gas for trips + hotel costs but I have made new friends, got hooked up with an AWESOME LDS and got a new dive buddy out of it. +++++'s all around. Would do it again in a second even though I may never be an OW inst. I do not have one negative thing to say about going through the DM class but maybe you get out of it exactly what you put into it.

I don't think anyone is saying anything negative about the class. Most guys seem to do the DM thing at the same time in their lives. It's something that you have to be ready for. And age doesn't have anything to do with it. When I did the DM thing, I was in the best shape of my life. It was a frame of mind that made me do the DM thing, probably more than anything else. But, that frame of mind remains to this day. If you would have told me 5 years ago that I would be running a dive operation in Panama on the edge of the rainforest, I wouldn't have believed you. It's a step in the alpha male direction. I was a DM for a long time and didn't want to be an instructor. I only made the upgrade because of the dive op. I'm sure that there are as many other reasons for being a DM as there are means to accomplishing them...

I just finished the DM course(Yesterday to be exact) and I did it for my future. I will be retiring in 2 or 3 years. My wife and I want to move some place warm(ie Cayman, Bahamas, Hawaii...etc). My wife is good with being retired, she likes the garden, reading....etc. I need something to do, and am going on to the IDC so I'll be somewhat employable when I retire. My other option would be to sit on the Beach and become an alcoholic:D .

I'm not looking to make a living at it, just to have a little fun and have something to do. If I make a little spending money, that would be OK too.

Also being a DMC gave me new dive objectives (In Landlocked Calgary, it's good to have Dive objectives) and made me a better diver. I also liked the interaction with New first time divers( it's gratifing to pass on knowledge and assist in OW classes).

Wow was I reading too much into these posts or do they sound quite negative to anyone else ????  Maybe that is just the way I interpreted them.

Guys was a generalization not a gender thing... The negativity is not in the DM itself, but more of the direction in which we took it. Probably better to say something in the direction of... I had more grandiose ideas of what a DM would have been. Now that I am one, reality has set in...
