Skokie, Illinois...September 16, 2006 The local diving community and area residents helped celebrate International Beach Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 16 at Greenwood Beach in Evanston. 108 volunteers from Scuba Systems in Skokie and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago targeted the underwater and shoreline debris littering the beach.

The group filled 42 bags of trash, which weighed 367 pounds from one-half mile of beach. "At a quick glance, this beautiful Lake Michigan beach looked quite clean. However, the amount of debris picked up showed otherwise." said Nancy Boucha of Scuba Systems.

The most unusual find of the day was a sleeping bag. The biggest surprise was that more food wrappers were found than cigarrette butts. The best discovery was that not one single piece of debris was found underwater.

This event is the largest single day volunteer event on behalf of our underwater environment. It’s a fantastic example of how people can work together to take action.

In addition to being coordinated by Scuba Systems, www.scubasystems.org and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Chicago, www.jccc-Chi.org, the cleanup was also sponsored Project AWARE www.projectaware.org, and the Center for Ocean Conservancy, www.oceanconservancy.org.

Scuba Systems will be participating in next year's cleanup on September 15, 2007. This is a great conservation project for scouts, school groups, families and community service projects. Bring your friends and help make clean waters a reality.
