We were thinking of doing a beach AI day pass thing this time while we are down there. We will be there for a week. I'm sure these thing are designed for the cruse ship crowd but it seems like a good idea. Any suggestions? Do it, dont do it, what is a good one if we choose to?

I would stay away from Playa Mia, its a big zoo and you have to pay to get in the door. I can suggest Mr. Sanchos as you can go in without pay, then choose to do the all inclusive thing with food and drinks, or just order off the menu. The beach is about the same and it tends to be less crowded with cruise ship weenies than others. On the plus side, we have checked their kitchen and been doing our surface intervals there for years-- and our divers don't get sick from the food (as best we know).

+1 for Mr Sanchos. We've been there (with the crew from Aldora) dozens of times. Good food. We don't drink anything other that soda on SI, of course. The beach is nice. The staff is nice.

I agree with stay away from Playa Mia. We went once and it was horrible. We went to Mr Sanchos for drinks last time we were there and liked it enough that when we go this year, we are going to do the all inclusive package.

I can agree with Buccanos as well. Actually there are more than a few that are good, including Playa Palancar, its just that we have more familiarity with Mr. Sanchos and they have water toy activities as well as sand and food.

If that is what you are looking for then I agree with Mr. Sanchos.

And no Dave, I've never gotten sick when we SI'd there with ya'll.

PS. Tell Jorge I'll see him the last week of January.

Don't do the AI beach club thing unless you are each capable of hammering down 15-20 weak drinks to break even. Far better to go to a beach club that is free or charges $2-$3 bucks for entry and then pay as you need for lounge chairs, umbrella, drinks, food, etc.

My suggestion would be to take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen.

If you are interested in snorkling from shore, Buccano's and Playa Azul Beach Club will fit the bill. They are in the north. Playa Azul is free to enter, but of course one is expected to eat/drink in exchange for using their loungers and shade. Since it's closer to downtown it's way less expensive via taxi than going south. If you are looking for that long walkable stretch of sand then go south. I have gone to Paradise Beach Club in the past... clean & well run, comfortable loungers, quiet vs the always present soundtrack at other places. Expensive food - go over the bill carefully. Playa Palancar gets a thumbs up from friends too.
