Myself and another diver(Rafael) did two dives today w/ BDS in the outer harbor. Dove the City of Salisbury and the canyon area off the Brewsters. Everything co-operated except for the viz -- maybe 8 - 10 feet at best between both sites w/ lots of particulate matter in the water. Brought home a few keepers and grabbed a bunch of just-shorts & one 5 1/2"er. Did see an eelish fish of some kind w/ tiger-type markings...Ocean Pout? He spooked me a little when I hit the underside of a ledge with my light and there he was staring at me. All and all, another great day diving w/ Capt. Pat & BDS.

Sounds like you guys had a decent time! We just booked Sept 24 - definitely want to do the City of Salisbury again - if you'd like to join us.

:thumbs_up :thumbs_up :thumbs_up I just wanted to say thanks to Lobsta man, we had a good time he was a really good buddy, it was my first dive after my ow cert. i was testing my new gear, i was kind of concern about the temp of the water, my first time with BDS, well you know first time out is never easy, but LM and Pat were so cool, they helped me to have a very nice day and a good dive as a matter of fact i been out with Pat from BSD, for six more dives after that.

What are canyons like? I've dove it a couple times with John Chaplain from his boat. It didn't appear to be anyway like description on on Scuba New England (http://www.scuba-newengland.com/DiveSiteDetail.asp?DiveSiteID=45&StateID=MA) I must have not been in right spot. I did find scallops (not much, about a dozen) in sand gravel before hit rocks and starts to slope up. Made nice Lobster and Scallop feast.

I'm interested in anyone sharing where exactly to enter to find canyons.

I have not read what Scuba New England has to say regarding the canyons, but they are huge rock formations that begin in about 60' and slope right up to the surface. Natural swimthroughs between the formations make this an interesting dive. There are usually some bugs around and as you said scallops, especially early in the season. It is a pretty cool dive but the surge can be quite powerful. The site is exposed to the open sea.

While diving off the Brewtser Island(I can't remember which one, Middle?) I really didn't get out far enough off the island to get to the canyons. Although I was heading SW away from that island and came to a deeper area that sloped down from the kelpy stuff into the darker water with larger boulders. I think if I kept on going I would have gotten to the area described as the canyons. I was trying to stay closer to the island(and the boat) and looking for lobsters, so I turned back around. I was attempting to hook up with either BDS or CAD this weekend, but the last time I read it, the weather forecast looked grim...especially for the North Shore.

PS Thanks for the kind words, Rafa.

I think the Canyons are on the east to southeast side of outer brewster. I didn't explore the canyons the time I dove there, as I was busy collecting these lobsters. http://www.bostondiverservices.com/Lobsters.bmp

Matt Silvia would know for sure, or Capt Pat.

Here is the description from Capt. Pat's site:
The Canyons are located on the Northeast side of Outer Brewster Island. Huge Ice Age boulders tower toward the surface providing canyons to swim through. This is a spectacular Lobstering site. Depths range from 10’ to 60’.

The one time I've dove this site was with Pat earlier this year. We anchored within ~50 yards of the island....we dropped down in about 25-30 feet of water. We swam parallel to the island towards deeper water (i am not 100% sure of the direction -- I believe northeast)....and encountered all kinds of cool canyons and overhangs. Very scenic.

On this chart, we were anchored somewhere close to where the 56 foot depth is showing on the north side of the island (but in shallower water close to shore):
