When it comes to photography I know what i'm talking about, I speak from experience that is deeper and richer than most others.
And that's the problem, this has NOTHING to do with photography, this has to do with diving skills, since the skills are required before you can become one of the photographers that *doesn't* lie on the reef to take a shot.

Skills first, photography second.

Dare I risk bringing this thread back to its original question? That is, in paraphrase, “Which BC should I get for photography?”
A look at what top photographers use and recommend might be illuminating, don't you think?
Just so happens the Winter issue of Fathoms has the answer from several...
Michelle Hall - Scubapro Classic Stab Jacket
Mike deGruy - Scubapro Stab Jacket
Doug Perrine - Seaquest Explorer (tropical) otherwise US Divers Sonic
Stan Waterman - Scubapro
Marty Snyderman - Scubapro Glide Plus
Howard Hall - Scubapro Classic Stab Jacket
Stuart Westmorland - Mares Jacket
T. Charles Erickson - Oceanic jacket
Tanya Burnett - Zeagle Ranger
Chris Newbert - Oceanic Contour Bioflex
--------
Not listed in Fathoms is Cathy Church, who recommends a jacket in her photography classes.
--------
Me? I use the Seaquest Explorer in the tropics, the Dive-Rite Transpac II or a Seaquest Pro QD elsewhere... but then I'm a photographer of little merit.

I keep looking in my Fish ID book for the "Little Merit" with little luck. Could you possibly give us the latin name for it? :tease: (sorry I just COULDN'T resist)

Believe it or not I actually have a couple of photo credits in SSI's latest OW manual... Fooled 'em good, didn't I?

Thanks to Rick Murchison for actually having a novel thought and posting information that pertainned to the original question.

:whoa:

Rick Murchison,

That's what I said, the topic is "BCs and Photography” it’s not "why I should develop cheesy diving skills and be ridiculed by arrogant snobs".

Cheesy diving skills? And you're calling others arrogant snobs? Guess we know you are definately one of those photographers who dive and not a diver that takes pictures. From your comments here...I'm proud to be a diver first. You can keep your lofty attitude and worship of Saint Ansel, I don't want the association.

Hello,

As you are well aware of this thread went thru some serious editing, looks like not all was cleaned up. This was actually said out of context and should never have been stated by me and for that i'm sorry.

Have not been divng with any of the big name photographers, but have seen a couple who have at least one book in print and another guy who features in Asian diver magazine, and at first i thought they had actually decided to sleep on the reef, i found one of them lieing accross the top of staghorn coral.

I suppose when the pressures on for that cover shot you do what you consider neccesary.

PS they were all wearing jackets.

Hello,

See that's just so wrong it's not funny. The groups that I have went out with advocates it's ok to touch if you know where to touch, it's ok to lay if you know where. Like I said it all boils down to a) know your subject b) know your enviroment and c) know yourself.
