I tried a few words but can't find anything about this on the board or net.

At a local shop there are BCs that do not have air bladders. I do not remember what they are called and how well they work but the idea of a balanced outfit looks very cool.

So who has some info on them ?

I think you have somehow misunderstood the equipment you saw. I can't imagine how a device would compensate for buoyancy loss without an air chamber of some sort.

I am thinking BP (back pack) without the wing. If I am guessing right, what you saw was a back pack, they are normally paired with a bladder (aka wing) but since they are sold separately, you may have just see one part (the BP), the wings(bladders) were likely close by. They are typically refered to as a BP/wing.

What they said^

Here's an example of a backplate/harness, it's separate wing and mated together as the full system needed to dive. Together it's a very balanced system since the bladder size can be changed for the type of diving being done.

Thank you very much for the replies guys. I am going to have to do some homework before I post here again.

All the best

Was this what you saw?

XS Scuba BC500 PonyPac Scuba Harness

It is set up for a pony, but I think I've seen it rigged up to carry full size tanks, like an AL80
Once you add the bands/aircell, it really is just a BC.

Turn your PonyPac Into a Companion BC
BP500
Pair Cam Bands - Standard Length 6.9" to 8.0" diameter
BC530
Companion Air Cell with Inflator and BC QD Hose

With a J-Valve?

I haven't been to many shops that have a 50 year-old backpack hanging on the wall for sale...lol

US Divers (Aqua Lung) used to have a set up for kids that was only a surface unit with a small pony bottle and regulator that was basically snorkeling with a tank. It has a jacket style "BCD" which did't inflate and was basically a life jacket keeping the kid on the surface. It was supposed to get the child excited about learning to dive when they got older, kind of like the SCUBA Ranger and PADI Seal team programs. It looked like mom and dad's gear but would not let the wearer underwater.
