I'm a pretty new diver and I am looking for some tips for assembling my gear. (good ideas for what goes where.) I'm doing my AOW next weekend and I have more stuff than I did for OW.

I'll tell you what I got.

I have a Zeagle Ranger (old style w/ roll down pocket.)
Octo+ Alternate air source
SPG/Depth Gauge on retractor (lower left metal D-ring)
Wrist mount computer
Compass (wrist mount, but now that I have the computer, two wristmounts seem kinda annoying)
Shears

I'm also doing my first night dive, and I was told I need three lights. (where do they go?)

Recommendations and advice is greatly appreciated.

I, too, have a Zeagle ranger (love the thing). The way I do mine:
-- Atmos AI(air-integrated) computer, clipped to lower left d-ring with stainless steel snap-bolt. The compass is on this unit. I like to unclip it and hold it in front of me as I swim while navigating, so that all my information (depth, direction, air, etc) is right in front of me(although I suppose this also the case with wrist-mount). When I'm not navigating, I can just peek down & to the left to see it.
-- Dacor viper octo clipped to lower d-ring on right shoulder strap
-- Cheap blunt-tip UK Fusilier knife ty-wrapped to holes in right front cummerbun flap.
-- I'll carry my primary light on the lower right d-ring, one backup light clipped to my octo hose(thinking of changing this), and the third in my left pocket with my safety sausage.

Assuming you're diving an aluminum 80:

Once you've established you optimum weight, balance and trim, once you have your B/C on your tank and your regulator attached, take a small piece of duct tape and tape around one of your hoses is some sort of fashion that let's you judge the vertical placement of your tank on your B/C. That way you'll set your trim in a consistent location.

Or develop some other system, such as using a hand span between the top of the tank strap and the radius/flat intersection at the top of the tank.

Three dive lights?? One in hand, clip to right d-ring for entry/exit. One in pocket..third?? other pocket?

SPG clicpped to left hip d-ring. If hose isn't long enough then lower shoulder d-ring.
Octo in a octo holder clipped to lower right shoulder d-ring.
Shears..my knife is mounted to the lower part of my left shoulder strap. ..partially behind the pocket.

I carry a primary dive light that I clip to upper right d-ring, a backup attached to my right side harness (Mini Q-40), and a tank marker attached to the valve.

Have ever seen two lights on DIR or Cave diver's rig.? They put two scout lights on each D-rings except the primary one.

Ohhh so it is the dark side of diving that uses three lights. Thanks for shedding the light on the subject. Acutally I could see a cave diver with several lights.
