My husband and I just finished our OW certification yesterday and are looking to invest some money into our own equipment. We have talked to other divers but I wanted to ask all of you (or those that will answer). What would you buy first if you could only buy one of the two right away...BC or Reg??

Thanks in advance for your posts! :)

Buy regulators. Until maybe 15 years ago, BCs were completely optional equipment.

Also, your regs will need service every year or two depending on the brand, so you might want to get something that you can have serviced locally. If you let us know what brands are available in your area, I'm sure some owners will speak up.

I got my reg first, and borrowed, rented or did without for first couple of years. I did have access to my dads set of gear when we were not diving together and used his sp horse collar bc and tankharness and rented different bc's otherwise. Worked well for me.

Me personally, I'd buy regs first. Why? I know they are clean and ready to go out of the box. (At least better be.) Plus, rentals.. man, you NEVER know what condition they are in when you get them and you never know if they cleaned them well enough/properly from the last time someome threw up in it. (Gross, I know...)

Hope this helps,

Michael

How comfortable are you in the water?

The reason I ask is when I would help a friend of mine who was an instructor, he use to give the best regs to the students who were the most uncomfortable. If you or your husband fall into that group then I would say buy the best breather you can first.

Also, have you tried out a lot of equipment, different makes, different design ideas, etc. You need to know what works for you.

If you have to choose, I'd say regulators. And buy as "high-end" within the product line as you can. Your regulators will last your entire dive career, so don't pinch pennies here.... but do shop around for good support and good price!!

Most rental BC's will be jacket-style, thus should be similar to what you trained in, and unless you are really large or really small, you should be able to rent one that fits... but.... be 100% sure you know how the rental BC "works" before hitting the water (if it is different from what you are familiar with).

Have fun and Dive Safe!

Ditto on the Regs first. They are very portable if you want to travel.

Well, I'm going to bring up a couple of other ideas. First off, where are you diving? Is it mostly local? Do you have a shop with good rental equipment available to you? (We are very lucky in Seattle; we have quite a few shops that take good care of their rental gear.) Secondly, how difficult are you to fit? If you're average sized and can easily rent a BC that fits you well, that makes the regulators more attractive. If you're a difficult size (very small or very large), buying your own BC first might make more sense, as a poorly fitted BC makes diving quite uncomfortable.

If you are mostly diving on tropical trips, I think I'd go with the majority opinion and get regs. But unlike some of the advice you've gotten, I would NOT recommend going for the top-end regulators at the highest price point. We bought Aqualung Titan LXs as our first regs -- They weren't cheap, but they were far from the top of the line. We have been COMPLETELY happy with the purchase -- the regs have been all over the place, and down to 130 feet, and have performed reliably and comfortably. I use much higher end regs on my doubles, and they do breathe a tad better, but certainly not enough to justify the difference in cost if I had bought them new (which I didn't).

Spend some time doing some research before plunking down dollars on scuba gear. The range of prices and equipment is enormous, and judicious shopping can leave you with extra money to pick up smaller pieces, like dive lights or markers.

I agree with TSandM. Research what is available to you and decide how much you can afford to spend. If you buy a complete setup because it is cheap, you may be disappointed in the long run. Remember that it is life support equipment, get the best you can afford, shop smart.;)
