What a beautiful, but sad slide show.
The use of snuba to make a living in Indonesia is more prevalent than most realize. These people usually have some awareness of the bends, but their lack of scientific understanding and the need to make ends meet gave them very little options in their eyes.
My folks once dove the coast of Java with some local treasure hunters who were searching for porcelain goods from sunken Chinese ships from hundreds of years ago. The visibility couldn't be any worse. The locals would stay down for a long time below 100' depth feeling around and collecting porcelain goods. When they ascend they would shake their bodies vigorously to try to "shake off" the bends. My folks learned that it wasn't uncommon for some of the men to die just a week later, but many continue the treasure hunt. Before leaving, my folks advised them some basic knowledge about the bends with little hope that they can help save a few lives.
