I bought the Divers Supply Sea Elite budget package with the covert regulator upgrade and the Mares Puck Pro computer. Honestly it all works fine, but I'm mostly just doing local quarry dives, though.

Do you want to buy ALL of the gear to start?

You could start with just mask/fins/computer to start for traveling and continue to rent a BCD/regulator/tanks.

Here are the brands that seem to be a good value to me:

Regs: Deep6
Fins: Deep6 eddie fin (got mine for $90ish on sale)
Computer: Really depends. Huge range here from $140 for basic (zoop/mares puck), to $300 for an oceanic geo 2.0, to $600-$700 for a used Shearwater Perdix. I think I'll probably end up w/ an oceanic geo.
Mask: Very personal to you
BCD/wetsuit: Haven't researched
