So I'll be in Coz from July 16th to August 3rd and I narrowed it down the hotel between Barracuda and VillaBlanca (sadly Scuba Club Cozumel did not yet answer to my email!). They're about the same price; however, it's not clear which one is the best (location, service, etc). We'll be diving with Dive Paradise (cause they don't have problems with snorkelers riding along on the boat - my gf doesn't dive).

Anyone can help me out?

Location...

The Barracuda is in town, on the south side. It is within easy walking distance to the shops and restaurants around the plaza.

Villablanca is a mile or so south of town. There are some shops and a couple of smaller restaurants nearby, and it's a $3-4 cab ride to town.

My only fear with the Barracuda is a recent review on tripadvisor, about the pool and bar which are affiliated with but not owned by the Barracuda people:

The new bar was the only problem. It is run by the No Name Bar people . They used to be south of town at the cruise ship pier & catered to the cruise ship crews. Thats still their basic client base, along with anyone else who happens to walk down the street & wants to walk into the pool/bar area. There is public access to the pool from the street which keeps the area packed all day & makes the area right outside your rooms loud & noisy all day long. There is LOUD music & screaming & carrying on from mid-morning until night. Most nights it went until 10 or 11pm, and later. This might be fine if you had come to "party" in Cozumel, but most people who stay at the Barracuda used to be scuba divers with 6am wake up calls for diving in the morning. We had one of the 2 rooms on the lower beachfront which used to be the best locations on the property. Alas, no more. Not only were there tables with people about 5 feet from our door, but we came in one afternoon to find that OUR personal lounge chairs had been taken off of our patio & drug down to the public seating. So we couldnt even sit outside & enjoy the ocean. There was no question at all about leaving anything outside on your porch/balcony to dry anymore. And while I realize that here in the U.S. you cant leave stuff outside without expecting it to be taken - people who have come to the Barracuda for years had really been used to being able to do that ! Now you have to take everything inside & share your shower with your gear all day/night long and of course your gear never dries out between dives. One diver who had an upstairs room told me of having a wetsuit stolen off the balcony. Another diver told me that he & his wife were sitting on the far beach area - away from the pool, enjoying the view between our morning dive & awaiting the afternoon boat pickup, when a waitress came over & demanded that he order $10 worth of drinks/food or leave the table. This man was a seasoned Coz traveler & refused, telling her that he had already spent enough money staying at the hotel & with DP that he quite rightfully believed he had the right to sit at the table for an hour. Another couple STAYING AT the hotel told us that they couldnt even get a lounger on the beach for all the 'public people' there & complained to the hotel about it.
There were several return customers there, like myself, who were shaking their heads & missing "the old Barracuda" .

I've stayed at Barracuda for the last 4 trips and will be there next month again for 12 days.I like the walking distance to the town center and the Chedraui supermarket. Also like the entry area for shorediving, night diving/or snorkeling. The small pool can be alittle crowded especially by crews from the cruise ships.Having their own pier, dive shop and lockers are also a plus.Nice seaview and sunset on the second and third floors. For the price and location, its hard to complain. Its a divers' budget hotel in a great location.I can deal with some of the minor inconveniences....but for others it maybe a major hassle. We've been treated nice by their staff so far.Be aware of your belongings by the pool.I had a towel and 10 pounds of weights stolen.I have to pay for the weights but the hotel manager was nice not to make me pay for the missing towel. On a budget, between Villablanca and Barracuda,me and my family of four divers always prefer Barracuda,.....Can't wait to be back next month...

Stayed at Barracuda in February. Room was clean. Staff was freindly. Location is great. Price was right.

The more cruise ships there are in town, the larger the crowd is at the pool area. On most days the noise level drops after the cruise ships leave, 5 or 6pm. However, if I recall correctly, the music blairs until almost midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. There is no safe in the room, but you can have valuables put in the hotel safe if you need to.

Would I stay there again? For Sure! Price and Location are hard to beat. I don't think I used a taxi the whole week I was there. Everything you need is within walking distance; grocery store, phone/internet service, restruants, piers... I would recommend asking for a room on the second floor as they have a small balcony where you can dry your gear without fear of it taking a walk, or you can just sit out and enjoy the sunset with a soothing drink.

Hope you enjoy your trip,
AL

Another option very near Barracuda (for pier pickup) & with good rates -- a block from the waterfront and more upscale -- is the boutique hotel Mi Casa en Cozumel, Mi Casa en Cozumel But read room descriptions carefully as not all have A/C.
And you can hang out at the Barracuda pool in the afternoons (or any other waterside club) -- no problem.

:crafty: I've stayed at villablanca twice and really liked the place, the location is quiet, the rooms on the south side are best[costs like 15.00 to upgrade per night].Depends on what you like personally-I dont party all that much when I am diving so it suited me fine. short ride to town [4-5 bucks] and dive paradise will pick you up right across the street.Have a
great time!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a fan of the Barracuda after having theft problems there in the past. I wrote a long review of what happened here...

Cozumel: Barracuda - Traveler Reviews - Barracuda stole money from us twice - TripAdvisor

This was some years ago now, but the only reason I raise it up again was the mention of using the house safe in a previous post. DO NOT trust your belongings in the house safe there. The same management is in place from when we had our horrific experience. I know many people who have been back there and had no problems. That's great for them. We'll never use them again.

Without commenting Marcus' problem (but read it; it's interesting), I still would not use a hotel desk clerk safe. The hotel I use has in-room safes and you set the passcode; I suppose those are safer, and I do like to keep a stack of small bills in it along with my travelers checks - which could be replaced, but a pain.

For my laptop, cameras and other valuables that do get left in the room at times, I count on Cozumel's low crime rate and my trip insurance. Itemizing on your homeowners insurance is also a good idea.

Maybe, but if it's unscrupulous hotel management one is concerned about, remember that those in-room safes will open for a master key and the management has them.
