Who has been to Barbados for diving? Is it as good a Bonaire? I am looking for a 7 - 10 day trip in mid October. I have only dived in Cozumel. Loved that and going to FIJI in 2 weeks.

It was extremely excellent diving. Never been to Bonaire, but it was the first diving destination that has given Puerto Rico a run for the money for coral/sponge life/health and number of 'rarer' fish species. On one dive we saw 8 turtles! I will be posting a trip report on my website soon, so I'll post a notice on the board when I finish it.

Thanks Frank,
So the island of Puerto Rico is good? Who did you dive with and were did you stay for Puerto Rico and Barbados?
It would be easy to get there and did you go to the other side of the island from
San Waun for diving?

I was there in January (on a one day stop from a cruise ship) and dove with Blue Reef Diving. John came out to the pier in his ancient mini-van and gave me a ride to his shop. He's up the coast a ways outside of town. We made two reef dives, both from a small boat, and I really enjoyed myself. John and his wife treated me very well and were very nice to deal with. The reef is healthy and in good shape, but I didn't see a huge amount of fish. Conditions were good, the dive master knew his business. One of the things that I thought was kind of cool is that you loaded the boat off the beach in front of his shop, by wading down to it, across the sand. Then hop in, fire the engine and off you go. Enter the water by doing a back flip off the gunnel.:)

Both are great places, both have spectacular sites.

Most (not all) sites on Barbados that I've been to have been from charter boats. Where many of the sites from Bonaire were readily accessible from shore or boat.

I highly recommend High Tide Willy and the gang are great.

Hey everyone, my magum opus, um trip report for Barbados 2003 is finally posted. It's at http://frankandjen.aesdesigns.com/ - click on the trip reports link (near the bottom left). It's the only trip report that we have there, so that's what will come up... Let me know if you have any other questions. I didn't go into tons of detail in order to get it posted quickly.

Ed, in P.R. I've dove with Dive Copamarina in the south west. Nice walls, plenty of fish, and a good number of spur and groove coral formations. Nice vis too. On the east side of the Island, I've gone out with Casa Del Mar. We've seen some large spotted eagle rays there and a turtle. Hope that helps. For 2004, I'm planning a trip to dive all over the place - from Culebra Island (also nice) to Desecheo Island (never been there).

I'll second that recommendation!

I've had the pleasure of diving with Willy's staff from High Tide Watersports on two seperate occasions. Like him, they are all great folks to deal with, and we've had great dives with them!

Thanks Frank, great report. I do Barbados every fall and really enjoyed your report. I generally stay at The Sandy Beach but have been diving off the "Scotch and Soda" and "Bad Habbits (sic)"with Ram and Trevor for years. I have met Sara from One and One but, as yet, have never had the pleasure of diving with her.

Barbados, not exactly a well known diving destination, offers some great diving, from healthy reefs with the usual suspects to a really world class wreck (Stav). And of course, Carlisle Bay is a load of fun!

Again, great report!

Best regards; jbm
