I am seriously considering going to Bar Harbor in the days right after Christmas to
do some boat or shore diving. I have never dove there, though I have been many times on vacation and
know the island pretty good. Much of my family lives around the Bangor area. I live in NH and dive the
Maine/NH ocean througout the winter. I have a drysuit and all the fixings. I would appreciate info on where
to stay that time of year that's close to some good dive spots and close to any boats that might take divers
out [if any].
Are there any local New Year's Day dives? Any local club haapenings that time of year.
Thank you for any advice.............Joe

Joe,
You should contact Diver Ed (http://divered.com). He runs the Dive In theatre on weekdays during tourist season, but does boat dives on Sundays. I have been out with him a couple of times and he runs a good outfit. The other divers on the boat were all locals and dive with him regularly. They were a friendly and helpful bunch to dive with. Ed has a grill on the boat and encourages you to bring along food to grill for the trip back in after the last dive. You can also reach them through their club website (http://www.underwatersuperhero.com) where they have a Calendar.

Good luck & Happy diving
Graham

Thanks Graham - I know about Diver Ed and the League - I will be in contact with them when the time approaches. I will probably go up near the end of the week - Not sure I want to stay Sunday unless there is something special going on for a New Years' Day dive. I am interested in what accomodations are available on the isand that time of year without paying $300/night. It will be off season so there should be cheaper places around. Worse comes to worse I'll just stay in Bangor and commute for a couple days. Is there any marine life left then or has it all headed to deeper water like down here?

Hey Joe and Graham!

Graham called it correctly. Contact Diver Ed at either of the websites below. As of now there are no dives listed for New Years Weekend... though I would suspect there may be a scallop charter in there on Saturday.
As for lodging, I know the Atlantic Oceanside is open all year round along with Hascoms. Hanscoms is reasonable at that time of the year. I just emailed Eddie about that weekend since he is sending out dive club updates now.

Graham, as always... a pleasure to dive with you again this summer!

Cheers!
Joe

Following up... Eddie emailed back and it looks like a scallop charter on the 31st and a Recovery charter (???) scheduled for the first. Not sure what we are recovering. Give Eddie a call at 207-288-DIVE (3483).

Thanks - I will get back in contact as the time approaches - I had hopes of going to Key West over Christmas but I can't afford it, so I want to try up your way instead.

Hi Joe,
I'm heading up your way this weekend. I understand that Eddie has charters on Saturday and Sunday so I'm hoping to go out on both days. Are you planning to dive this weekend?

Graham

Hey Graham,

I will be diving both days, assisting Eddie as a DM with new students. Looking forward to seeing you!

Hangover recovery is my guess. ;)
