Normally I don't post comments, usually just enjoy reading about diving experiences and getting new ideas on gear and such. However, after my experience yesterday, thought I would post about my dives and get some ideas what happened.

The weekend started off bad, got lost getting to the dive site. I live in Italy and we travel to Croatia to go diving. The group left before me and I never had a problem getting there before, but somehow lost my way for over an hour. Fine, dealt with it and got there two hours later than everyone else. Got up yesterday to dive, did a shore dive and other than visibility, was a great dive 18C water temperatures. Getting out of the water, cut my hand on a rock near the dive ladder, no big deal. Start taking my wetsuit off and the zipper broke off. Had to rent one from the LDC, not too bad, but the suit was obviously well used and worn out.

So, we get on the boat to go to the Baron Gautch (German wreck off the coast of Croatia), been waiting to do this since I started diving in Croatia. Anyway, so the water is choppy and not much of a fun boat ride, but I dealt with it. Get to the dive site, and almost fell over twice with the pitching of the boat. Did I mention this would have been my 13th dive? Anyway, so my buddy and I get in the water and fight the current and waves to the line and start to decend. At about 19 meters, the water gets a little cooler, no big deal dealt with it before. Then, at around 26 meters, gets really cold and becomes hard to breath through reg. Slowed down figuring it was just excitement or something. Then it just seemed to get worse. Breathing became almost impossible and I tapped my buddy to ascend. Tried to monitor how fast I was coming up the rope, but seemed like no matter how much air I let out of the BCD, seemed to expand even quicker (yes I know I was releasing, not adding). Dive computer screaming at me the whole ascent about speed. And I think my safety stop ended up being about two minutes. Total bottom time was about 8 minutes.
After I surfaced, almost got hit by the bow of the boat and had to swim almost all the way around to get back on the boat. While climbing the ladder, my mask falls off and with the boat pitching so bad, climbing out was a definite challange.

Got on the boat and was almost like sea sickness set in. Never been seasick in my life until yesterday. Lay down on the bench waiting for the others to finish their dive, fell asleep and got sunburned.

So, is there anything to the whole 13 being an unlucky number? The one dive I have longed to do here, turned out to be the worst experience I have had yet as a diver.

In hindsight, I wonder if I was just more exerted from the swim to the line than I thought and was trying to get more air from Reg than normal and it freaked me out. Any thoughts. Thanks

It happens. Has nothing to do with numbers, luck, fate, voodoo, divine intervention, whether or not you kicked the dog last night or any other thing.

This is one of those dives that you can put in your "You Wouldn't Believe this Dive" chapter of you life's diving log.

You got back on the boat of your own accord, unharmed and in one piece, and you're breathing today to share your story with us . . . all is good !!! :D

I agree.. But, thanks for sharing.. That was a great story. I write stories (whether they are are good or bad times for me doesn't matter) on my website and blog and I noticed that folks really enjoy my "bad times" stories better than any of them. Nice to read someone else's for a change and glad things didn't get bad as they could have. Just make sure you go conquer that same dive soon. :D

That is true. I did worry for a while, with the ascent rate, about any side effects. Think it is more that my pride is hurt for not being able to finish a dive. And that my buddy didn't get to finish the dive either. Of course, he is Rescue, so if I would have had any problems he was right there. It does get scary here with the language barrier. Most of the boat operators and DMs don't speak english.

Diving is the only relaxation I have. All the cares of the world go away when I get underwater.

Bottom Seeker, sounds like you needed to do like hotels & just skip number 13......@ least there are no other 13's in the number system.....hang in there, it can only get better (unless it get's worse).......good luck on the rest of them........

I was concerned about the breathing problem. Suppose the water was cold enough to start freezing the regulator?

That particular wreck lies at 40m, usually the visibility is rather poor, and you know what you what kind of sea you had to go on to reach it (it is 7 NM from the coast, open sea). Are you really sure that with only 13 dives you want to dive it? Not trying to preach here, but...

I believe it was anxiety, perhaps you were not aware of it yourself.

I planned to go dive it today, after we did two simple dives in the Rovinj area yesterday, cleaning the bottom of various junk, we gave up. I felt tired and not willing to go early to the dive site, so we had breakfast, and left for home. It is quite possible you were there also, if you went on the Gautsch yesterday, as I got feedback that the visibility is very very poor from the group of divers that went in the afternoon.

Also, language barrier should not be a problem if you live in Italy, people in Istra speak Italian, some better then they speak Croatian.

Ditto, it's bad luck to be superstitious. :D
I am a Gazillion miles away from the experience of the others on this board. With that said, Kraken has it down; you made it and it should be one heck of an experience to reference in the future.

Well look at it this way....your next dive will be number 14. You're past it now. You'll never have to do number 13 again.
