I have just recently started using SCUBA, and only got interested in it after watching my buddies limit out on Lobster with what I perceived as little to no effort compared to freediving. I used to talk **** and say how I was more at one with the ocean by not using SCUBA. The same was for spearing. I have always considered it "Bad Form" to bring your speargun while using SCUBA. It seemed like deer hunting with a missile launcher, not much sport in that, just plain killing. I would talk trash about some random SCUBA dude I would see at the island all hooked up to the tanks and packing the big guns. It was not until recently when I joined the ranks of SCUBA that I started to really think about my stance on the matter.
This weekend I actually brought my Spear gun and my Pole Spear on the boat when I knew all I was going to do that day was SCUBA. Still on my first tank of the day I could not bring myself to grab the gun from the boat. Man did I pass up some killer fish on that dive. Before my second dive of the day I began eyeballing my speargun sitting between the seat and the side of the boat. It was calling to me, taunting me if you will. Then something happened that I never fully expected. My hand reached out and grabbed my Pole Spear. "I still cant justify the multi band gun" It felt wrong......just wrong.....but somehow slipped into the water with the Pole Spear in my grip, still not sure if I would actually use it or not we set off. Well to make a longer story a bit shorter I did spear a couple of Sheepsheads (pic attached) that will taste great for dinner some night in the near future, but did feel a little bit guilty about it. I justified this by recounting all the fish I let go that dive. I could have easily came up with a full stringer but only took what I would eat before my next trip.
Just wanted to know where everyone else stood on this. Is it bad form to spear and SCUBA? Is it not so bad if you only use a pole spear v.s. a band gun? Let me hear you SCUBA Board. Educate me on your beliefs.......please. :dontknow:

A lot of the big fish out where we are can't be speared while free diving. Too deep, too stiff currents etc. A lot of the stuff like lionfish are just easier to spear on scuba. Most of the time I use a pole, but have no qualms shooting with bands. I only catch what I can eat, which is generally a lot, but I still eat em all.
Doing it on a rebreather is cheating... It's easier to be sneaky while free diving, but if you can be sneaky on scuba, then by all means. Just takes a bit less effort to spear.

I utterly fail to see how killing anything is a "sport". If you want to eat it, and it's legal to take, go ahead.

Do you worry about how "sporting" it is when you order a burger? Is that also "cheating"?

This has been hotly debated a lot. Scuba vs Free.
If it's legal, why feel guilty?
If you do feel guilty, don't do it. Guilt sucks.
I think you're misjudging the ease of scuba spearing though.
Personally, I free dive because it's illegal to use scuba in Belize.

It requires little to no skill to shoot a fish on scuba, yet can be considered a sport while free diving. I would never consider shooting a sheephead a sport either way. If you hold still they will come right up to your tip. They are also one of the few predators of urchins left in SoCal. If I were the hunting type, I would stick to yellowtail or white sea bass. At least that requires a bit of stealth.

I don't know how to define it. All I know is that it sure is fun...addicting. I don't know why.

It holds absolutely no interest to me.

I'd *prefer* if others didn't go about killing the very creatures I dive to see, but I respect their legal right to do so.

Yeah....you said it. They do come right up to you. Do we have an Urchin problem here in So Cal? Should I not be taking the Sheepies? I will keep your post in mind my next time out.

Yes, we do have an urchin problem. Sea otter numbers are declining, so urchin populations are increasing, which affects our kelp. I say, save the otters instead :)

Many sites along our coasts and islands have urchin barrens. The main predators are large male sheephead, large lobsters and otters. The otters were wiped out in SoCal, so all that stands between healthy kelp forests and urchin barrens are sheephead and large lobsters.
