Were headed to Cayman Brac on September 8th, or are we? This will be our first trip to the Cayman islands. Does anyone have any idea about the conditions we could expect 3 weeks after a Cat 5 hurricane hits the island??

Them's the chances you take when you go cheap - i.e. hurricane season!

I was stuck on Roatan for a hurricane once - been there done that - makes for great stories (year's later)

First of all, it is not a Cat 5 hurricane.

Second of all, it does not look like it will "HIT" Cayman Brac at all.

The forecast for the last 24 hours has moved it farther and farther away. Now the eye is not expected to come within 120 miles. It is likely the forecast will contune that trend.

That is not much of a hit as far as hurricanes go.

Will there be damage, at that distance, it will not be much.

The barge just came and supplies are in good shape.

We hope and pray that all there will be fine.

As for your vacation, you should be fine, no ill effects.

I feel selfish for even worrying about my "vacation" but thanks for the replies. The last forecast I saw had Dean building back up to a category 5 after it passed Jamaica, which put it right on top of the caymans, but your right things are looking better for us, but not so good for someone else. I'm sure you've all seen this link, but if not here goes:

From the latest map, Brac and LC should be under blue skies within the next couple of hours. Grand Cayman should be seeing clearing skies by dark. Mike Whittington at Sunset House has some updates on their website. Looks like they dodged a big bullet!

I'll be going to GC the end of September, according to a dive shop I have been talking to, they definately dodged the bullet. So far, so good.

Dean missed (thank god!). As for your question, we were on LC about 6 weeks after Ivan hit and the diving was actually very good. Apparently many fish spawn in the rough seas from hurricanes and there were TONS of very small juveniles all over the reefs. It seemed like every coral head we looked at had some little "dice" swimming around it (juvenile trunkfish).

Its not gonna miss Cancun tho.. Good thing im back at work..

Edit: and everything Ive heard since friday evening (Cancun time) till now has been that itll most likely be cat 5 when it hit there..

Dean missed Cancun by a L-O-N-G way. It was a miss for Cozumel too. It was little more that a stiff breeze there.

Dean did roar ashore just north of Chetumal, Mexico. Reports are still forthcoming from there to assess the full extent of damages.
