I'm buying a new computer and aside from the debate over buying a Suunto Vytec (Wrist) vs. Oceanic Pro Plus Console (I know - odd comparison). I'm wondering if anyone would recommend having a backup SPG/Depth or is it simply overkill.

Overkill.

If you are diving reasonably, when your computer dies (which is pretty rare), you just end the dive by doing a safe ascent and that's it.

Besides, if you have a console, where would you put the backup? On the opposite side??

(If you dive a Vytec, you can put a SPG on a relatively short hose and clip it off to make it unobtrusive.)

In my opinion, a back SPG is never overkill, especially with a backup depth gauge. If, for instance, your computer fail during an expensive vacation, you might still continue the dive without computer on the next day.

Even if you have backup SPG only (without depth gauge), you can easily rent a computer, and continue the dive after 24 hour with new computer. I don't think it is easy to find a rent computer with integrated air.

I'd keep the SPG, even if I dove a Vytec. It'd be nice to know that little transmitter is working correctly. and if you have it clipped off, it's not in the way, so why not?

The backup SPG is really more of a 'nice to have' than a necessity, especially if you are doing sport diving. If you get into anything technical (wreck penetrations, deeper diving, etc.) than I'd consider the SPG to be more important.

I dive with a Datamax Pro+, and used only that for 250+ dives (I love it, by the way). Only once did I have a mal-function: water leaked into the battery compartment at the beginning of a dive and fried the computer. Because it's air integrated I had no sense of available air, etc.

I now dive with both the Oceanic Datamax Pro+ and the VT Pro+ (basically the wrist version of the Damamax Pro+), but it's more of a luxury than a requirement for most dives.

My SPG IS my backup. I only use it to confirm what I already know. You should be able to estimate to within 100 psi how much pressure you've got in your tanks at any one point in time.

I have Vytek AI and also have a backup spg clipped off to my BC. Hopefully i wont ever have to use my spg but it is there incase i ever do. For me its peace of mind knowing that if something should happen it is there, regardless of the type of diving i am doing.

I use the Vytec, AI transmitter & and an SPG on a 24" hose clipped off on my left waist d-ring.The backup SPG is *not* overkill IMO. I would not dive the transmitter without the SPG.
