Hey guys,

I'm looking for a good backup setup for my VT 4.1.

Originally I was going to just use a B.U.D. and pressure gauge. But I think I want something a little more capable. So I've picked a few options and I'm curious as to what your thoughts are.

They are:

Aeris A300 ai
Oceanic Pro 3
Sherwood Wisdom 3

What are your thoughts?

I have the BUD. It has the same algorithm as my other computer. It is easy to clip on my BC and leave it there. All in all a reasonably priced backup. I used it on one trip when I left my main computer at the room. It worked just fine for a backup.

But I think I want something a little more capable.

To answer your question relevantly, I think we need to know what you want the computer to be more capable of, that the Oceanic Worldwide BUD cannot do.

Richard.

Well I just thought it may be nice to have a fully functional backup incase anything happens to my VT 4.1. Like logging, backlight, air integration etc. Basically I can get any of the above mentioned computers from my LDS for $225 - $250 more.

My thought is this: 1) either the exact computer running at the exact same setting, 2) OR a computer run in gauage mode.

In case 1, if the main computer die, you look at your backup, they should show your the exact same info, ie nitrogen loading, no flight time .... In case 2, if the main computer die, you call the dive and asecent using the gauge. Once on SI, you use table for later dives.

Think about it, if you use a different computers as backup, they give out different number, which one do you trust?

The Pro Plus 3 would fit your wants. It will run the same algorithm as your VT4.

edit, changed because I misunderstood

Better using a backup with the same algorithm, personally I use two Suuntos (Vytec and Vyper)

I would be for the BUD & SPG for 2 reasons. 1. The BUD runs the same algorithms as the VT4 (Nitrox also) so there's no reason there would be one computer being more or less conservative than the other. 2. The SPG does not require an additional battery. Even if both computers should fail at the same time (extremely unlikely), you still know how much gas you have to make it to the surface. I typically dive a VT4 & a Shearwater Petrel with an SPG on my recreational configuration. Overkill?... Perhaps,.... but better to have it & not need it, than to not have it & need it.

I thought one of the limitations of the BUD was that it didn't save a log of dives?
