I recently did a liveaboard in the Coral Sea and we did a lot of drift diving where we'd be taken out in the inflatables and do our drift dive back to the boat. We all did backward roll entries into the water. A couple of people were worried at first but everybody did it. Just make sure you have a way to get back in the boat. You might want to try a practice or 2 with some help on the boat to work out the getting in and out of the water thing.

Most people who own a boat as the OP intends will install some sort of dive ladder and therefore there will be no problem with reboarding the boat. N

I'm okay with back rolls now, but I hurt my lower back in Cozumel last year. I got in a hurry and didn't get my rear-end far enough out over the water. When I rolled back, my lower back rolled over the edge of the boat. I was able to finish the dive and even climbed the ladder unassisted to get back on the boat, but it was about 6 weeks before things got back to what passes as normal with my lower back.

I should point out that I have chronic lower back problems, which probably made this worse for me. Murphy struck, I guess.
