Dove Back Beach on 7/10/04 at low tide. First salt water dive of the year.

Temps 59 above, 53 at 25 feet

The only lobsters we saw were shorties. Far more student divers than lobsters. Parking was competitive.

Visibility 15-20 feet.

Good to be wet.

there is excellent diving in cape ann,try out folly cove(very limited parking)or cathedral rocks (deepest shore dive at cape ann)is an excellent choice if weather condotions allow.Back beach is an alright dive but used mostly for training, there are better options in the region, there,s a book "dive cape ann" with all the details...peace

I did Back Beach today 7/11/04. The one neat thing was I found a good size striped bass that just floated motionless 2-3 feet away watching me. I rested on the rocks for at least 5 minutes watching him while a smaller bass milled aroung in the background.. He showed no sign of leaving, so I finally moved on. I've seen a number of striped bass but never one that would hang motionless or that close before. It was great to get a nice close look. Now, if I could just find a striper in Rhode Island that would do that.....

Most of the stripers will follow divers closely and if you want some reel entertainment.... grab a small lobster or a crab and break it open and offer it to the stripers. If you lay on the bottom and extend your arm out with the food in it, after about 3 minutes they will usually come in and eat right out of your hand!

Happy Feeding!

I've seen them follow before but never hang moitionless or so close. I tried kicking up the bottom to see if they were waiting for me to stir something up for them, but they showed no interest.

Very different from RI where they usually run away.
