I have used backplates in the past with only one problem tha caused me to get away from them for the past couple of years. While wearing the plate the lower stomach strap always seemed to come from my lower rib area instead of my waist. this caused the buckle to connect above my belly button. Is this normal, I do like the plate on my shoulder blades, but this causes 15" (common) plates to seem short. Do most of you connect the lower strap higher with a plate vrs regular BC. Thanks in advance.

'Usual' may be a better word than 'normal'. I know that my waist strap seems to sit a bit high. But, there are adaptations of standard backplates that may allow you to change this, such as longer plates. Although it is easy to think of backplates as single size, in fact there are a growing number of suppliers who offer longer plates for taller divers. You might visit the Deep Sea Supply website (https://www.deepseasupply.com/) or PM Tobin (the owner) here on SB (Cool_Hardware52).

Not necessarily. You can adjust the position of the waist strap to a certain extent with the crotch strap, and lengthening the chest straps. That means the enitre unit sits lower and will affect your trim.
