I am currently in the NAUI OW course through our school district "Continuing Adult Education Program" (Philadelphia suburbs):
Pool/Classroom- 10 sessions - $175 (includes equipment)
Book/DVD (Optional) - $65
4 Checkout Dives - $175 Total (includes equipment)
I purchased my own mask, snorkel, fins, boots, 3m wetsuit - $375

Wow... I'd love to have had a more in-depth course like that. I did a PADI course - all they offered was a quickie 2-weekend deal.

I thought it was a good course - I'm not complaining about my training, but something like this takes time to absorb - and a longer course would have been nice (luckily I had a very good/experienced buddy on my first dive trip that filled in the knowledge gaps for me really quickly.).

To answer the question, mine was a 2 for 1 $300 course (so, $150 for me) plus I had to get my mask/fins/snorkel etc etc at the shop offering the deal.

ScubaJW:
I paid over 400 dollars to get OW cerified in western NY... But I looked around other states like Washington state and Florida, usually around 150 dollars for the course itself. Oh well...

Where In FL?

I've head rumors of such deals, but NEVER have seen such. RU sure that includes CO dives? In Denver the course is $150, but that get's one pool and classroom training WITHOUT materials.... ;)

i got my PADI OWC for 650$ in Sharm El-Shekh, including:
** The use of a full gear during the course and the study materials
** The certification and the Log Book
** 4 nights half Board accomodation in a hotel

My LDS charges 159 for books, dives, cert fees, and gear. If you don't have mask, snorkel, booties, fins you can rent them for 15 bucks per day. Most shops on the island run the same price with Padi being the dominant agency but there is a shop that does NAUI and one shop that does IANTD. Most of the shops also run a special 99$ everyonce in awhile and my LDS does that often for military members. I lucked out and the Navy's MWR ran a special for sailors. We paid MWR 75$ and they paid everything else so I got my OW for 75$!!!!
I just completed AOW and EANx to 40% for 250$ but I didn't have to pay for gear since I had already purchased mine. I'm looking to take rescue in OCT and that is gonna run me 174$.

The cool thing with my LDS is that for OW cert they are givin a coupon for a free boat dive after you complete your cert.
They are also allowing instructors to plan all cert dives above OW on boats at no extra cost. I got to do all my AOW and EANx dives from a boat for free. That rocked!

My wife just started he BOW class, $300 plus materials, of course PADI (Put another Dollar In) charges $35.00 for a useless DVD and $65.00 for a book made for a 2 year old. I am sure my LDS had his hand in the Mark-up on those. I still need to be AOW certified, but cant justify the $325.00 plus $75.00 for materials, for a "Special" C-Card..

My OW class, with materials, pool, gear and checkout dives was $259. Personal gear was minimal. But, if you think that's all getting certified will cost you, you better hope you hate diving!

I'm normally totally cheap - very conservative with money. I even hate clothes shopping. I put off getting certified for a long time due to the expense. I was certified 01/23/05 After I got certified though, the bug really bit. Like any addiction, it starts small, then it escalates! First the OW and personal gear, then I was invited by a friend on a 3 day live aboard $450. I bought a wetsuit for the trip $199, plus core warmer $100, weights, fins, light $150. BC $500. I shopped on E-Bay and got a AI computer with regulator, octo and compass for $152 a good buy! ( I've already replaced it). I had a great time on the trip. I wanted to share boat diving with my hubby. Several trips on local dive boats at $140 for both. Then I got tired of renting his gear. I suggested he buy his own and we get our own tanks. Two HP 100s $300 each, two HP 80s $150 each. His gear was around $2,500. Since he got new gear I figured I deserved a new regulator. $450. Then bought a new AI hoseless wrist mounted computer-just because I wanted it - very unlike me! (Vytec LOVE IT) Bought a dive watch for my hubby trying to keep it even. :05: Did I mention before the first trip - since the Peace has nitrox, hubby and I got nitrox certs too. (He didn't go on the trip ) Well then, we had to get DAN 02 and CPR certified - safety counts right? So on to advanced OW course and Stress and Rescue. Then I realize I don't like having to go on a scheduled boat trip to get to the good dive sites. What to do? Bought a boat $18,000 cash. But wait! Warm water beckons. Trip to Cozumel for four during the summer $5,000. Wanted my son to dive there, so paid for his OW and basic gear. Then bought him a regulator for his B-Day. Now my other son wants to certify. Hubby and I are going to get the DiveCon cert to go with the boat (again safety counts!) Going to the Channel Islands again, in Oct, but now taking my son, so it's $950. The moral of the story is, the OW is cheap no matter what you pay. It's the rest that'll get you, and you won't regret any of it! :D

Great Story!!! Are you on the Dave Ramsey plan paying with cash (ie boat)??
I've already bought my reg and I'm about to purchase my BC. In 2 weeks dive class starts. I've been wanting to dive for the last 3-4 years and my fiance has agreed she wants to as well. Wooohooo
