Greetings,

I was wondering about possible work opportunities with Honduran non-profits.

I am planning on coming down to Utila and maybe Roatan. I have over 7 years experience working with non-profits, mainly in Chicago, IL as a community organizer and recruiter.

I have researched some great groups working in Honduras and have even contemplated starting my own. Something maybe centered around literacy or education.

I really want to come down first and see what was needed in Honduras.

Well I am not down there yet and wanted the point of view of those who are there already. I am planning on working in the dive industry, but also wanted to research the possible work opportunities in the non-profit field.

Let's define terms.

You mention "possible work in the non-profit field".

Likely you are thinking that there would be pay involved?

Not likely. Understand that so many US and Canadian church related organizations charge their parishioners money so they can go to Honduras for weeks and months to do volunteer work, the place is flooded with "people on a mission".

It always struck me as curious, charging vacation rates to volunteers and the sending that voluntary labor to a land where local people work for pennies an hour.

If you want to do some good, either by volunteering, donating supplies or cash.... check out Roatan Childrens Fund | Helping the children of Roatan which operates in support of Majken Broby Children's Home (orphanage) in Gravel Bay.

This operation, I can guarantee you, is not a "black hole" for your money or time.

Community Organizers from Chicago, such as you describe yourself, have had a lot of impact on the world.

Including you RoatanMan...you're my hero :angel2:

Really - you don't have anything better to do than insult and (unsuccessfully) try to bait a moderator? :D

How smart is that? :shakehead:
