Very misleading thread headline. According to the article, and others, the woman died on the way to go snorkeling when she was thrown from the boat by a wave, not after (having been) snorkelng (and the connotations that implies).

Is that better??

Cut and paste from the first report.

This news report goes into more detail. The boat departed Sanur for a snorkeling tour at Manta Point, Nusa Penida, one of the most famous & visited dive sites in Indonesia.

When they arrived to the waters off Kelingking Beach, the boat's engine hit some driftwood causing it to stall, unable to move away from area. Then 2 big waves hit, the 1st knocking off the deceased from boat, and the 2nd causing the boat to capsize.

It's not known if all were wearing lifejackets.

Also, the surviving victims were evacuated through Kelingking Beach.

The waves around Kelingking Beach are infamous for dangerous waves, and there's been multiple fatalities of foreign tourists over the past few years, and is now prohibited from swimming there.

Another version said she was trapped inside the boat.

Some footage I saw just now on the ABC News showed very rough seas indeed, looks like it might have been a very bad squall hit the boat, as later footage shows it nowhere near as rough.

So if she got thrown off overboard - did she drown? As a snorkeler she could have managed herself a bit I think (even without fins and mask on at the time) … More likely she was trapped under the capsized hull …

"Terjadi karena faktor alam. Gelombangnya tinggi. Kemudian ada kayu yang terbawa dan menghantam mesin. Mesinnya mati dan menjadi terbalik," jelas Kasi Humas Polres Klungkung, Aiptu Agus Widiono, Senin (24/3/2025). .
Eng: It happened due to natural factors. The waves were high. Then there was wood that was carried and hit the engine. The engine died and it turned over," explained Klungkung Police Public Relations Chief, Aiptu Agus Widiono, Monday

Some of the group were snorkelling underwater when the boat was hit by a large wave that threw Ms Maree overboard.

A second wave then hit and capsized Sea Dragon 2.

It appears there's 3 seperate versions of the incident, with the video footage revealing the truth, so far.

Extreme weather in Bali, 144 incidents 4 people die on land

4 incidents. 3 fishermen set out in separate boats, are still missing at sea.
1 fisherman & boat hit by high waves, rescued by another fisherman

3 incidents. 1 fisherman missing after hit by big waves.
1 fisherman hit by high waves, rescued by other fishermen

2 fisherman suffer engine failure in extreme sea conditions, rescued by SAR (Search and Rescue Agency)

1 Fishermen capsized, brought to shore by other fishermen.

It was reported there was extreme weather all over Bali on 17-23 March '25.

There were 9 seperate incidents all over Bali involving fishermen going overboard, capsizing or missing over the weekend of 22-23 March, due to high waves & bad sea weather. 4 fishermen are still missing from 4 seperate boat incidents.

I chose not to go to Bali over the weekend because the weather was bad, and I want to skip silent day on 27 Mar. But I went fishing on a jukung 2 weeks ago along Southern Bali, and the weather and conditions were perfect. I wouldn't of chanced it now though.

Rainy season, with its choppy high seas, isn't the time to go on a small craft (banka) from Sanur to Nusa Penida for snorkeling. Tourists need to be aware of these safety issues when traveling.
