Quick question--how dynamic is the Australia Dive Job Market? Do a lot of people come and go, or does it not change so much? I'm getting my Masters in Library Science, and I've been wanting to immigrate to undertake a library job, but obviously as a fresh graduate and a non-Australian, or not even a British person or Kiwi, I'm not so marketable to be sponsored for a work permit. And it's also the case where you can't apply for most jobs if you don't have working rights (citizenship or permit). So I was hatching this scheme to get instructor qualifications and try to find a job as an instructor on the GBR, as I have my Japanese speaking ability as a potential selling point. That way I'd gain a work permit, I'd have a job, and I could look for work in my profession while gaining a bit of income.

Have I gone completely mental? If someone can advise as to the dive job market and whether this is a dream whose logistics are worth pursuing, I'd be grateful. Cheers!

Some of the dive shops in Cairns, Port Douglas and the Gold Coast require Japanese fluent staff. Suggest searching the Padi and SSI sites and emailing your CV.

http://www.seek.com.au is the largest job board in Australia.
Will give you a fair idea of whats on the go and salaries.

If you can speak fluent Japanese you are will get a job as in instructor within 3 days of landing in Cairns.

Cheers

Cheers guys! I appreciate your help. Yeah, I've heard the Gold Coast is a hotbed for those who can speak Japanese. I will definitely get my books back out and start polishing back up. I'll have to learn some specialty Japanese for diving, but that's not a problem :)

I'm not sure that you would be able to stay in Australia for more than a year even if you were employed as an instructor. I suggest you check this as I do know of a dive instructor who had to leave Australia after a year.
