Is the aurora borealis the same thing as northern lights?

Yes, they're one in the same.

I looked outside late last night, but I didn't see anything. However, I live in the middle of the city, so I probably wouldn't see anything. :(

Snowbear;

We had them all night last night too! They were mostly green, and really hard to get a picture of because they were moving too fast.
The solar flare has certainly given us some of the most unique Northern Lights I've ever seen! Usually they are ribbon-like, but this time they were almost like green ghosts swishing and flashing through the sky.

I agree with the audible part - some people say that they don't make any noise, but usually those are the same people that say you can't smell snow. :)

... on rare occasions we get the ribbons here (looking North) but last night the clouds were in the way. Hopefully we will get a better shot at them tonight.

But nothin compared to what you are seeing.... WOW!

LOL!! I forgot about smelling snow! We don't have any up here yet, but I'll be reminded soon enough, I'm sure!

I didn't get to watch them last night 'cause the clouds rolled in, but we did respond about 35 miles down the hwy to some drunk bozo who couldn't keep it between the ditches and left parts of his car strewn along several hundred feet of roadway. There were a few holes in the clouds so we got glimpses of the 'Lights on the way down and back.

Ron - The news said there was another big solar flare shot off last night, so maybe if it's clear again tonight we'll get another show!

Oh - p.s. - the drunk guy ended up with a a broken nose.

So far there's nothing yet!

We have a few clouds, but it's still fairly clear. It's crispy & cold out - according to the thermometer on my front porch it's 38 degrees, but the birdbath that's sitting right next to it is full of frozen water, so I'm thinking that maybe it's a bit off.:cold:

Hopefully we will get some good ones tonight!

sighted here in NJ but I missed them - DAMN!

Thanks Snowbear. Fantastic.
I missed it when I was in Alaska..too early in the season maybe.

I was able to open it here on my home computer. Very nice!

well i couldn't get the vid to open, but it sounds like a lot of people got a much better show than i did.
i'm not complaining though...there was just this eerie patch of bright red sky the other night and i didn't know what it was. people were gathered outside saying how creepy it was, and it wasn't until i got into the car and turned on the radio that i found out what it was
