For some reason my Dell system has been plagued with audio problems that Dell was never able to correct.

When I play the same file in different apps, I either get nice clean audio... or what sounds like loud static mostly obscuring the actual audio.

I've noticed that the "static" sound occurs in Windows Media Player, Adobe Premiere 3.0 and Adobe Premiere 6.0 but does NOT occur in Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum ver 8 or Sound Forge 4.5 (currently a Sony product).

I have a SoundBlaster Audigy card installed and set as the default sound device.

Any ideas why the two Sony products would play the same sound file cleanly whereas the Adobe and Microsoft products don't?

I've had to learn Vegas to finish up several projects with near term deadlines.

I'm familiar with all of those products, Dr Bill, but can't say why that might be happening. Agreed, those are strange circumstances.

- First, I'd suggest upgrading to latest audio drivers.
- Have you checked for app updates?
- So at what point did it begin having this problem? Always? When you added Vegas? Or always made noise, but works better with Vegas now? Or...

Premiere and the other products worked fine over a year ago, then suddenly began having this strange problem with the audio. I'm not aware of anything I did to the computer near the time it started (although some automatic updates may have occurred at that time).

I've tried reinstalling the sound card, but since it works fine with the Sony products that doesn't seem to be the problem. It must be something different in the way the two sets of products address the audio subsystem.

So you did have this problem prior to installing Sony products, as in you had the problem for some time, then you happened to try using Vegas and it doesn't exhibit the problem.

I'm not sure whether you have upgraded the audio drivers in reinstalling the card but try that if not. I had a similar static problem though it wasn't exclusive to specific apps, and it was resolved with sound driver update. I assume you aren't using multiple versions of Premiere on the same system as your message states, correct?

I did install new sound drivers with no change.

Yes, I use Premiere 6.0 and Premiere Elements 3.0 on the same system... never had a problem doing that in the past (and do it on my laptop with no problems right now).

I would have to guess that your wonderful Windows has done an update! Check your logs and see if that is the case. You might have to contact the different vendors for the newer OP settings and install them. I run Mac's and have encountered misc. problems with both op systems and vendors on occasion after an update.
