I'm bummed. I just got a call from the Aggressor boats and they will no longer be diving the Tuamotus as of Feb 06 because it is "advanced diving" and they feel they would get more people if they moved the boat. I'm scheduled to go in March 06.

They are now going to dive the Society Islands - Bora Bora, Raiatea, & Huahine. This may change some. I was really looking forward to the flying in the Tuamotus and have heard some mixed opinions on the other islands and considering changing my destination now.

Really need some advice.

Thanks

Might I ask what kind of advice you're seeking? Are you wanting info on diving the Society Islands, or alternate destinations?

Info on the Society Islands. How does it compare? If it's not great I have plenty of others destinations in mind.

Thanks

I was out there last October and dove in both the Society Islands and the Tuamotus. Although the Tuamotu Atolls are unique and spectacular, you wont be disapointed in the diving around the Societies; The coral reefs are healthy and prolific, with a majority of hard corals over soft. Lots of big critters, especially at Bora Bora where Manta encounters are almost guaranteed. Infact, off of Tahiti I was on a dive when a curious Humpback whale aproached and poked me with its fin. You'll see bunches of sharks, the black tips pretty much escort you on every dive.
Check out my pictures on ScubaBoard from the trip and PM me if you have any specific questions. Other than that, all I can say is that you will have a fantastic time diving the Societies.

While you won't have the pass diving you would have at Rangiroa, for example, you can still have lots of big critter encounters. As was mentioned, there is a resident population of Mantas in the Bora Bora lagoon - they're wonderful! Sharks are basically a given on every dive. Beautiful hard corals, LOTS of fish life, beautiful scenics.

It's wonderful diving. The humpbacks won't be there in March - they're farther south for the summer, but these islands are beautiful. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

But, if you're wanting the thrill rides, have you thought about Yap/Palau?

Yes, check out my signature. Thanks for the advice. Probably going to stick with it.

IMHO I think that you will enjoy the Societies, afterall what isn't there to like about the huge amount of large critters, sharks, rays, turtles etc. My question is with the Aggressor fleet. I certainly don't see how they can call the Tuamotu's "advanced" diving. Shooting the pass in Rangiroa is exhilarating, but advanced? My wife, who has about 100 dives, is certainly not advanced and had no problems in Rangiroa or Manihi.
