Vicenzia and Buckley jumped the price, so I'm shopping around. Any suggestions.

Sherpa,
I just paid $440 for my insurance through IMS, which is NAUI's company of choice. Last year PADI endorsed IMS as okay, but they are lagging in their approval this year. Legally, they have no grounds to say you can't use it. IMS policies will cover any agency you teach for.

I contacted V&B for info about how much will I have to pay to become a NAUI instructor. They told me that changing from a PADI divemaster to a NAUI instructor was a collosal mistake as they could not insure me then. I think I choose the oportune time to "Jump Ship". In my conversations with IMS, I believe that they stated they would also insure PADI divemasters and Instructors, and at a fraction of the cost. Give 'em a ring!

SSI & NAUI use IMS. I highly recommend it. PADI has to except it.

IMS will only cover instructors who also teach NAUI and SSI. They will not take anyone who isn't one of their 4 agencies.

Thanks, Mike

I have been considering becoming a TDI instructor for a while. Now it's a done deal

Sherpa....

If needed, I can connect you via Private Message to several good TDI types around me that really know what's what in that agency and will be happy to answer your questions.

Myself, I'm working through SDI's divemaster program and am very happy with the instruction I'm getting.

A very observant PADI instructor pointed out something to me about this insurance issue....

The letter that was sent out stating that the rates neglected to mention what company is underwriting the insurance. It does mention the agent, but not who's actually carrying the burden of coverage.

So how does one know what's what about who's covering you? As in, are they solvent, track record, loss record, # of dollars in the bank, what states are they registered in, etc?

While not a dive professional yet (just a DM Candidate), I agree that the rates quoted are a bit out of range for those that do not rely on instruction as a major income stream and do it for the love of scuba.

I have been watching the outrage with the increase in insurance prices with some interest because my husband is a PADI DM. We have a baby on the way so he decided pretty quickly that he would be taking the year off of being a DM when he saw the insurance rates but I am glad to see we aren't the only one that PADI has priced out of the professional diving business.

Jeff and I had dinner last night with the couple (an Instructor and DM) who trained us as new divers. They are both also not renewing because the cost for them is greater than they have made any year they have been involved in the sport.

Another PADI DM I talked to has decided to enroll in the SSI Dive Con program because you can do more and pay less for insurance.

I think the sport is loosing a lot (some of the best I know) DM's, AI's and Instructors because PADI raised their insurance rates through the roof. I am sure that small dive shops in non-resort areas around the country will suffer and ultimately go out of business if they do not have part-time staff to supply student training. I think this is a sad time for our sport.

Just my opinion.
