Any suggestions on what size/type of bolt and nut to use to attach a pioneer wing to a backplate. Not using a STA just the built in tank stabilizers so it needs to be low profile so the tank doesn't sit on the bolts.

In the speacial bins in the hardware isle of Lowes you will find stainless steel bolts and nuts. You want 1/4"or 5/16" with 2 flatwashers (one for each side, by bolt head and by the nut). They might have a " pan head machine screw which will have a low profile head with a slot for the outside of your gear under your tank. At the other side you can probably use a wing nut that will sit in the recess of your backplate without poking you in the back. Otherwise just use a standard nut. I like the one with the plastic ocking insert. I think they call them aircraft nuts. For length you only need enough to reach through the washers, plate, wing gromet, and let you get the nut completely on the bolt. You don't need any bolt sticking out of the nut but you want to be sure the nut is all the way on the bolt.

Hope this helps. :D

Pan head bolts that are cut for a regular screwdriver work good. Also consider upgrading to nylock nuts. They are about a $1 a piece but will never come a loose like the wing nuts. You just need enough bolt sticking through for a couple of flat washers and a lock washer with wing nuts. Also I use a crescent wrench and tighten the wing nuts down. I have a lost a couple over the years and just like to be careful.

I just did the same thing myself.
Go to West Marine (their prices were better than lowes)
Get 2 16x SS Bolts
Get 2 SS Wing Nuts That Fit The Bolts
And 2 SS Washers
I used a little bit of Lock Tight on the bolts to make them stick a little better but still be able to remove without any tools

I think the total cost was maybe $11.00 but i got spares of everything

the cam bands and tank should secure it. no need for the bolts.
