I'm new to diving, just got my OW cert last week. I'm looking to buy a regulator and am considering the mk17/x650 and the Z2. I've read some pretty good things about the mk17/x650 on this forum and I'm currently leaning towards that. But I've read that Atomic generally make very good regulators also, and the Z2 being at the lower end of their range is also within my budget. I couldn't find many posts on Z2 however.

Does any have experience with both? I will be mainly diving in waters from 60F-70F, which one will have the least inhalation effort?

Thanks

They're both excellent, and when adjusted, breathe about the same, however I beleive the Z2 is less expensive and works great. (I have a Z1).

All things considered, you should go with the reg that has better local service, since how well it breathes depends mostly on how well it's serviced and adjusted. If you buy a reg, your LDS should set it up for you for free, and make sure it's adjusted to your liking.

I dive a Z2...fantastic reg it's pretty much the same breather as its high end brothers from Atomic. The Z2 has a two year service interval (one small issue with Z1 was a one year service interval).

Scubapros are fantastic too of course...Atomics are designed by some former employees of them so they are just as good. I'm sure you won't notice breathing resistance diff b/t a well tuned Atomic and a well tuned Scubapro.

Cheers.

As I understand, the Z2 is exactly the same as atomic's more expensive regulators except it is made from cheaper materials. As you get more expensive, you get more titanium is pretty much the deal with them. With a Z2 you're getting a reg that will perform just as well as a T2, but for a fraction of the cost. I'm thinking about grabbing one myself because in my limited experience I love the way Atomics breathe. Definated much smoother than my Sherwood. Granted I've only tried a few different regs. The scubapro is probably great too.

Read the reviews. They all say that the Atomics are the best breathers and that all models breathe the same. That is a big reason I got a Z2 and I have not regretted it. The semi annual maintenance doesn't hurt. I have tried several other regs and always want to back to my Z2
