I am looking at a used atomic T1 first and second stage reg on e-bay. The reg was bought new in 2001. Would the first stage have the jet seat piston? or would I have to upgrade? how can you tell by looking at the first stage if it has the jet seat piston setup? The setup also comes with an air integrated cobra dive computer. He is asking around $350.00, is this a good price?

Look at the rubber cap on the high pressure end of the first stage. If it has a strip of rubber going from one side to the other, with half moon type openings on either side of the strap then it has a Jet Seat Piston.

If it has a series of round holes in a metal cap it is the old design piston. I have included a link to a pre jet seat regulator below..http://cgi.ebay.com/Atomic-Titanium-B1-Regulator_W0

Is this the auction?

If so skip it if you are looking for a Ti first stage reg, the seller has mislabeled the auction. The first stage is NOT Titanium and the second stage is a B1 which does have a titanium inlet tube. About the only thing they got right more or less is that the computer is a Cobra made by Suunto.

Given that the seller says it was used six times I doubt that the first has been upgraded. He probably used it and it has sat in the closet for 8 years. Which means it should have a complete overhaul. I tend to take regs like that and spend about $100 in parts alone and do a full upgrade. At that point it is a B2. I am about to do that on a M1.

As for telling if the first has been upgraded. There is a rubber cap on the top of the first stage. If looks like a doughnut then it has the old style piston. If the cap completely covers the top then it has the updated jet piston. The piston change over occurred in 2002.

You have to be careful about what people call titanium regs. Most refer to the first stage which should have a statin appearance (versus shinny which is chrome) but because Atomic uses titanium for the inlet tube on the second stage people say the reg is titanium - the label on the B1 purge does not help.

This post by Darcy who works at Atomics might help as well.
