a friend is considering this reg.......she is about to start in the world of technical diving.....is this reg suited for that type of diving?

Yes, they are great for backgas.
For deco gas (50% O2 and higher), with an Atomic, she needs the M1, but regardless, she will need two backgas regulators which will never see more than 40% O2 for which Z2's work great. Tell her to get them without the first stage swivel.

This what the wife and I use for our backgas. They are primo - though we have the first stage swivels which we like. This should not be confused with the 2nd stage swivel that comes with the B2 and T2.

I can't say enough good things about the Z2's. I have one I use on a set of doubles. Its been down to 304 ft, and breathes great. Again nothing ove 40% O2, but great for back gas. You won't find a better performing reg at that price. I agree, skip the swivel. She will most likely be using a 7ft hose, which does not need a swivel.

what's wrong with the swivel 1st stage as a backgas regulator for doubles. I have a b2 with swivel 1st and 2nd stage that I was planning on converting to DIN and using as my primary regulator.

Nothing, except that it costs more.
Some people say that it's another failure point, but there are lots of people who dive with Scubapro MK25's which only come with the swivel, and it's not an issue. I say it's mostly an imaginary problem.

In fact, my backgas regs are B1's too, with the swivels, and I like them fine. I had one already, and also for some reason used B1's were much more easier to come by than used Z1's, so I went with a bunch of B1's. I have 5(backgas, stage, single tank, backup) of them along with a couple of M1's(deco) and a Z1(argon).

But since the OP's friend will be using these regs to use with backgas from the get-go, there's no reason to pay extra to get the swivel.

If you're using doubles with a 7' hose and a bungeed secondary, why do you need a swivel? They route perfectly without the extra piece...

for me its not about "why do you need it" its about "already have it". and like it. and don't want to buy another regulator. I have two non-swivel 1st stages, one for my left post and one for my stage/deco. so long as there isn't a compelling reason not to, I want to use a reg I already have.

I definitely appreciate the feedback and she does as well. I'll definitely tell her to go ahead with the purchase and tell her she can go the less expensive route without the swivel....I can't wait for her to buy one so i can check it out.....always wanted to try an atomic.....Had considered one for my doubles but ended up just buying another zeagle flathead....thanks
