New to SB. Only 8 dives under my belt. Just purchased Atom 2.0. I would prefer a metal band. can this be switched out?

Yes. There is post running through the band where it attaches to the PDC. Unscrew from either side, remove the post, change the band.
I use a Waterborne nylon webbing strap.
I don't know how well a metal band would fit, but give it a shot.
