I have just returned from a three week stay in West End. I completed 16 dives using Atlantic Sea Divers at the Half Moon resort. What a great choice that was. The people running the shop were fabulous, the divemasters were wonderful. All the equipment (ScubaPro) was brand new, we even had to remove the original tags off of some of the wetsuits. Even his compressor only has about 40 hours on it. The boat isn't the fanciest one in the water, but it is big and spacious, with easy entry and exit off the open back end.
This is a newly opened dive shop and they are just starting to build a cumstomer base, which was great for us as relatively new divers. A few times there were only the three of us in the boat, so we got pretty good care and attention.
My favourite dives were actually two that we did on the south side, Marys Place and Docs Retreat. There were some great wall dives on the north side, but these two just stood out as there seemed to be a lot more diversity, both in fish life and coral growth.

Well I piggy backed on this forum for months prior to going to Roatan, so I thought that at least I could add a few thoughts now that I have been there and back. One thing is for sure though, there is no question where our nexr Caribbean vacation will be; it'll be straight back to Roatan next winter.

How about some info on the prices of the Half Moon. the web site doesn't show prices, and is the restaurant food fairly good? Thanks.....

Big gulp...

I don't have prices for lodging at Half Moon resort, we were staying at a place called "The Wood House" which was about a two minute walk away. Half Moon did have some decent looking cabins that were just back in the trees but with a front deck facing the water. We often had lunch, late afternoon appetizers, or dinner at the restaurant. I think it was $6-8 for things like a grilled fish sandwich, same price range for a calamari appetizer. Their dinners were all in the $teens. The food and service were both good. Prices at Atlantic Sea Divers were pretty much the standard for Roatan; $30 per dive, $25 if you did 10 dives.

what were their boats like... or just one boat? do they run any of the longer trips like to the south shore, utila, barbarreta (sp?) or just dive the half moon bay and west bay areas?

just curious, not a lot on their website as of yet.

JC, most of their dives are planned for the general West End area. The furthest we went from Half Moon was to Spooky Channel. There were a few days when the forecast was for strong northerly winds. They moved the boat over to the south side and drove to the dock. They just have the one boat, not the newest or the fastest one but it's big and reliable.
Here is a link to a photo album that I have put up. You'll have to download a viewer to see it, but it's quick and free.

My wife and I just showed up on a Friday (April 9th) Morning as the Carnival Legend came to port. We snagged a rental car and got over to the West End. Talked to Edward (owner) and arranged for a couple of short noticed dives. I have over 20 years experience as a Navy diver and my SSI, my wife around 30 dives. Again, as we didn't have a lot of time for chit chat but I was very pleased with the staff and equipment. Made two dives not far out and kept the depth to less than 40fsw. Nice boat, simple, clean, good platform. We were using the Liquid Digital model 310 Camera/facemasks. We even downloaded the photos and video to Edward's Mac before we left. Got back to the ship with 15 minutes to spare. We are in the planning stages to go back this xmas for a couple of weeks. I liked the adjacent village and beach.

MRO; good to hear about another positive experience with Edwardo and his crew. I spent three weeks there and came away totally impressed.
