4 dives today with Korvette and a talented new diver, one dive was abbreviated.
Athens was great today. We started with 25-30' of vis....that's right 25-30. At the end of the day, with the multitude of divers and classes out there, the vis dropped to around 15-20', which is nothing to scoff at.
Water temps: 72-74 F.
We dove the "new" plane, the "cave" system, a few boats, etc. More than anything, we were just practicing trim and kicks. The new guy, a freshly minted 18 year old diver was excellent. He's a natural. Never once did I see him dirt dive and kick up the silt.
However, since he was so good for someone with only 4 dives to start the day, we must dog him about something.....and that something is that he is the reason for the title of this thread "The long surface swim"
We dropped down and swam about 14 mins to our intended target, a plane on the far end of the lake from us. Our new diver started developing ear clearing problems. No harm, no foul.....I had the same problem on dive 3. However, he developed this problem at the far end of the lake from our dock. So we tried to descend 2-3 more times. No go. We dive as a team, so we ascended and surface swam against the flow (wind) almost the entire length of the park. We had some laughs, avoided a few divers having problems descending and made it back.
Now even though I kid, we did the right thing, obviously. He feels bad about stopping the dive, but we assured him that it happens and there is no reason to risk ear injury.
Overall, great dives....I enjoyed each one. The 30' of vis to start the morning was impressive! It's weird to look down from a buoy and actually see what's below it. LOL.
Safe dives,
Cyp
