Found out this morning that the airline ATA has filed for Chapter 11 on 4/2/08 and has canceled all flights. :shakehead:

ATA Airlines

First Aloha, now ATA, who's next. This is very sad, as these two airlines catered to many tropical locations and very affordable rates. I hated it when ATA cut out its non-stop from the Bay Area to Cancun.

ATA's flight from Hawaii just landed in Oakland...empty :shakehead:

correction, no passengers, just the crew.

Whew... had me worried about that flight. Yes, bad news is "in the air." I hope we don't see too many more smaller budget airlines follow suit... if they do, all that will be left will be the high ticket big boys (although I've always gotten reasonable fares from Continental, and they are diver friendly).

This is sad to hear, I've flown with them a few times and had good experiences. One of my trips was only possible because of the smokin deal I got on the airfare, it seems as if deals like that are getting harder to find. I just hope this doesn't become a trend with other airlines, the more choices the better in my book.

I was kind of ticked when ATA discontinued service to MD and DC, so I could not use my rewards to the places I flew.

When America West was taken over by U S Air, we again got shafted with loss of rewards.

Look for more of this. I just read an article in the newspaper that Jet fuel is now $3.40 a gallon and travelers are complaning about the $25 to take an extra piece of luggage with them. The market will find a natural level it might be painful however.

If you read the airline bashing and TSA bashing threads it is a wonder anyone would want to fly anyway.

Probably the plane I was supposed to be on.

I was supposed to fly from Maui to Oakland at 11AM Thursday morning. Didn't hear about the ATA shutdown until about 7AM that morning. I ended up taking Hawaiian to Honolulu, playing tourist for a couple of days, then flying to SFO on United Saturday morning, at significantly higher fare than the $205 each way that I had paid ATA. :shakehead:

Aloha made life difficult with just 2 days notice. ATA's instant shutdown, right on the heels of the Aloha mess, caused even more disruption ---- bad enough that the Hawaii Tourism Authority ended up chartering flights to help out stranded passengers.
