Just had my first good day spear fishing/harpooning!
Visibility was about 6" so I stayed inteh kayak and shot down on them. Turns out a close range shot with a JBL one piece to the head of an asian carp will actually bend the spear shaft. Wonder if I can return it? I need a sold shaft spear.
However got a sweet horizontal shot on a big gar.
Two big common carp. One was huge but while stringing it I fumbled with my gear and he slid away.
Landed one BIG asian carp. I hit him in the head and for the next hour he would surface and swim in circles, porpise, do flips 30' from where I happened to be.
Then he dissapeared for a long time. Finaly I see him again swiming crookedly with his mouth stuck open and I glance one off his head again with my heart pounding and hands shaking and all tangled in my paddle line and spear retrieve line. Finaly he turned and gave me a broad side fillet shot.
THWACK! I landed him. Naturally forgot the camera but he was 3/4 the length of my leg.
would have actually been easier I think to have been in the water. I'd find a pod on the surface and try to paddle to them. Then cordinate securing my paddle and loading the spear while I coas to an intercept path. Too much comotion and they split before I can even take aim.
Other times there would be a school of like 10-15 in varrying sizes and in trying to find the big one and pick a shot I'd loose it then find a new target and just gonig nuts in the target ritch enviroment missed them all .
Still it was fun. I'll do it again. I wan't to make a spear that is mor durable in that circumstance.
