So me and my g/f will be in aruba 4th of july for a week. i have my open water and wanted to get advanced. she never did this so she will be getting the regular open water classes. I found few schools there but some sound a bit gheto since i spoke to a few. I am sure some of you been there and maybe even some took their classes there. can you guys recomend a school. here is a list of school

also she wears glasses/contacts do you recomend us getting her mask done here in US. i reather not since she might not like it but than again i want her to fully enjoy the experience. one of the school (red sail) said she can dive in contacts as long as when she is training she doesnt open her eye with mask off.

If you do a search here for ARUBA in the Scubaboard search tool, you'll find there is a lot of info on the dive operators in Aruba. chances are they have already been covered from the above list.

RedSail has a reputation of being a cattle boat in Aruba. they get all the cruise boat traffic. Mermaid doesn't have the best rep for other reasons. You'll find that all via search along with a few people who had a positive experience with them, but the info I read about them was enough for me to choose someone with not so many repetitive marks on their record.


Instead of he doing her whole class down in Aruba and taking up vacation time, should could consider doing her class and pool work up at home and doing a "referral" of the Open Water Dives while in Aruba. This way she wouldn't be in class while on vacation.

depends on what contacts she has if she dives in them. Soft contacts usually aren't a problem. But Hard contacts I wouldn't suggest diving in. I switch to a pair of soft contacts for any water sport. hard contacts easily come out in my experience when doing water sports.

you can have a mask made (or use inserts) for perscription. if she wants that, then have it made in the US. They won't be able to do it in a decent return time in Aruba for her to do the class on vacation most likely. I'd try the soft contacts first and see how she likes it before you get a copy
 
I'll be in Arube July 1-8 with my family. Plan on doing some boat and some shore dives. If you want to get together for a shore dive let me know.
 
How bad are her eyes? Up to a certain point it won't be a problem. If she's nearsighted the water supposedly corrects about 1 diopter. It might be nice not to worry about losing lenses during training when practicing alot of mask clears and stuff. On the other hand, if her eyes are really bad, it would be nice to still be able to see when she takes her mask off.

I used to have a mask with the dropin corrective lenses, it was helpful but not really necessary. Over the years I got less nearsighted and when the lenses got scratched up, I didn't bother replacing them. I'm still nearsighted but it doesn't make enough difference to bother.
 
I wear soft and have no problem I would advise wearing those for most sports.... Also I would suggest any of the instructors from Jads as I had dives with each over the past 2 trips.... very professional and fun.
