My son and I just returned from Aruba on a scuba diving trip. This is what we thought:

1) Everyone was VERY friendly....all the time.

2) We stayed at the Wetsin which was a nice hotel . Don't eat at the main hotels ($40-60+ per plate). They have great places to eat outside of the immediate area.

3) Mass transit by buss is cheap. I would not rent a car.

4) Try to stay at a hotel that offers shuttle service if possible. Taxi trips cost $10-20.

5) Every day, the weather was great. We logged 2 dives per day. Unique Sports was an outstanding dive charter service. They were funny and accomodating "thanks Erwin". The only part I did not enjoy was ending the dives with 1000+ lbs of air left. The dives were timed (35-40 minutes) regardless of consumption. That would be the only reason to change companies.

6) The vis was not great as the island was surrounded by sand bottom and not the typical caribbean reefs that you would expect. When the wind picks up...so does the sand.

7) We had to dive at limited locations.

8) The island is kid friendly, currancy was not a problem and it was clean. My son is 11 and his cert was not questioned. The Dutch community really went out of their way for us. We has a great time but we'll pic a different location for a dive trip.

*I have a lot of pic's both underwater and topside if you want to see a few...just ask.

az diver,
welcome to this board.
my son dove with me for the first time while in aruba.
we both enjoyed our stay on the island.
i wish y'all many more dive trips together.
regards,

Smokey on the E. Coast....how was the trip with your son? Where did you dive and who with? I'm sure you two had a blast, like us! I've discovered a few GREAT aspects of diving:

1) There's nothing better than having a junior as a dive buddy.
2) Planning trips with a junior diver
3) A young diver thrilled to discover what others only watch on TV or read about (as long as they appreciate what they are being introduced to)
4) Having your son give a pre-dive briefing before every dive
5) Watching a junior diver achieve nuetral boyancy, rarely adjusting his air and control through breathing
6) The confidence they build before, during and after each trip
6) Their attention to detail and safety on every dive
7) Having your junior dive buddy learn about the open water, marine life and the other world under water
8) A junior diver honing his skills during refresher classes and having the interest to take his skills to a higher level (JAOW and JDM)......and the best part
9) Planning the next trip on the way home

I hope you and your son continue the experience. I miss the East Coast (Md).

AZ, You will have to see my "mini-aruba" trip report...I will write it soon...but check out what I caught on camera!

az diver,
my son and i were in aruba '04.
we stayed at the renaissance resort.
we started out going with seperate ops.
i was diving with clive and my son was doing the discover thing with red sail.
however red sail ran out of dms and clive allowed my son to finish the week with us.
2 months later we are in Curacao and my son earns his ow.
i enjoy the dives that my son goes as my buddy.
regards,

My son is nine so he's not able to get certified yet.

I can't wait to experience with him the things you describe in this thread.

Awesome!

bvmjethead,
try hard not to push him.
he'll tell you when he's ready.

i never broached the subject with my son.
we were in curacao for a week at sunset waters resort when he announced that he would earn his ow.
he went with the house op, sunset divers, where he was the only student that week.
towards the end of our stay he was diving with us.
i thought for a 16 yr old he showed some mature thinking.
regards,

Nice trip report.
I'm leaving Sunday !:D

Dvrliz1....nice pic's! Where were you divng at? We didn't get to see the rays. I had a new Sea Life camera, trying to navagate, control boyancy and check the sights out all at the same time. My son must have been rolling his eye's at me. I'm sure it looked like my first time out. I was excited and only caught a few good underwater pics out of 300+. I'm signing up for a photography class ASAP before our next trip.
