I'm going to be in San Antonio for a meeting Aug 28 - Sep 2. I'll have a few days off during this time. Or, since the plane tickets haven't been bought, can tack a couple days on the beginning of the trip.

What diving is there in a reasonable distance during that time?

There is a dive shop on Stillhouse lake in Belton just a couple hours North. It is right on the lake and he rents everything you would need for diving. Here is the link: http://www.dashlink.com/~scuba/

I know there is places to dive closer to where you are but this is the only place i know that has everything for a traveling diver.

Thanks for the links and info. The Scubascool one was especially useful.

Rental gear in other places has been sort of spastic. I've got space/weight for some stuff. So what part of my gear should I plan to bring with me? I know for sure my gauges and regs. Anything else?

Buddies typically available walking in off the street on any day of the week? Or, do I need to link up with someone before coming?

I would bring your own mask for sure. You can probably rent BC weights etc.

You can keep checking this board divers are usually at Lake Travis every weekend. Canyon not so much. Check with a couple of shops to see if they are running any groups out to the local lakes you could hook up with them.

Here is a link to a local shop in San Antonio http://www.deepblueadventures.net/

Here is a couple of links for shops in Austin http://www.tomsscuba.com/

San Antonio depending on where you are is about 2 hours or so from Lake Travis. Your about an hour from Canyon.
Travis is the better lake to dive IMO.

Thanks, I'll plan on diving Lake Travis.

I'll also get ahold of the dive shops to see what they have cooking. 'Course that is some time off so I'll wait awhile for those specifics. Tourist traffic up here in the summer is so intense just needed to get the schedule squared away so the airplane tickets could be purchased.

Aug can be one of the hottest months of the year down here 100 degree days can and do happen. The water at that time of year will probably be in the low to mid 80's. Of couse it will cool off around 50ft.

Guess I can leave my dry suit at home, eh?

At least I can get in some diving in a new, to me, place.

You wouldn't be too hot with it...

Last year about that time, the temp was < 60 at around 80 ft. and got down to low 50s toward bottom.

Thanks for the info. Got enough now to do my planning. As the dates get closer will be trying to set up buddy schedules.
