So the purpose of this thread is to generate traffic?

Train wrecks usually do the best job of that ... but they seldom accomplish anything useful.

Creating threads to discuss ways to divide the community up into little groups seems a bit counterproductive to me.

I dive for recreation. What more needs to be said?

Apparently some people think there is a term "Technical Diver"

Who is TDI?
TDI is the largest technical certification agency in the world. As one of the first agencies to provide training in mixed gas diving and rebreathers, TDI is seen as an innovator of new diving techniques and programs which previously were not available to the general public. Training with TDI has provided divers with the opportunity to see such wrecks as the Andrea Doria, Luisitania and the Prince of Wales. TDI divers have explored underwater caves in Spain, Australia and Mexico and assisted as support divers on world record freedives done in the Red Sea.

I think that about sums up the whole shebang. Divers dive to the level of their ability, their certification, ...

... and their interest. What excites some people won't interest others in the least ... whether you're talking about reefs, wrecks, caves, hunting, fossil collecting, or any number of other reasons why people get enjoyment underwater.

Good thoughts. In the end, we are just divers.

We can sub category to Rec, Tech, UTD, GUE,DIR, and maybe even-OWOSH-[overweight out of shape], does not make much difference.

I've been diving for almost 40 years, these last few years, we now have labels. We used to be just divers, each accountable to his/her self and diving accordingly.

It does not seem that labels help that much-just divides what used to be a community.

I don't think getting paid is a good way to define "commercial" diving. I am not an instructor but I have assisted with more than my fair share of classes and that in no way comes close to what I would regard as commercial diving.

That's why I said if you get paid you might be either a professional and/or a commercial diver. That was in no way to imply that a dive instructor is a commercial diver. They are not the same. If you get paid to dive, you are a "professional". You might be a professional diver and still suck though...

So anyone have a definition for techrec or techreational diving?

I'm a Dork Diver and damn proud of it.

Do you know the origins of that term?

It was sniped from a thread started by a couple of DIR divers from California a few years back titled "And we'll laugh at you and you'll look like a dork".

It was meant to be an inside joke about DIR wannabes ...
