The answer is simple.

#1 -- He's a submarine

#2 -- He's a bird

To be fair, sometimes (strong currents when trying to hit a particular site on descent with no line for example), you need to fin to get there or miss it.

Man, I'll second this one !

I used to live and dive in West Palm Bch, FL ... drift dive capital of the US. The currents can be really strong ... up to 4-5+ knots at times. When the captain puts the boat in neutral and yells "Dive ... Dive ... Dive" , you need to get in the water and to the bottom as quickly as possible. Especially if you're trying to hit a small target, like a small wreck or a ledge. This often means going in negative and kicking your way down.

I didn't think either of these was that big of a deal and told them it depends on the situation and the divers preference. They both attacked me then. They were set on being right. Thoughts????

Sometimes you *will* be both. I normally feel more like a bird (why did he pick bird, rather than something that actually goes underwater like, say, a *fish*???), except when I misjudge the clearance above me when I'm going through an opening or tunnel and hear the tank hit something, reminding me that yes, I've still got a load of metal on my back, and feel more like a submarine...just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't there... ;-)

Like I said before...I think it's just something that comes natural. Don't know what all the TOTAl upset was.
