I purchased my gears from a popular internet store. I am living in Malaysia (high humidity, tropical :)).

"Sherwood Oasis Regulator" (First and Second stage are connected)
I open the box, and start breathing from the second stage while pressing the purge thing (no tank connected). Did I contaminate the regulator by doing this?

"Mares Vector Origin BC" with a LP hose (not connected to first stage).
When there is no rubber end cap at the opening of LP hose, would air contaminate the LP hose?

Are my gears contaminated?

Thank you.

I am no expert, but i have done the same thing you mentioned, and I have not had a problem with any of my gear. I think the big thing is not getting water inside the regs, especially salt water.

My suggestion to you is do as much diving as you can, and have your gear inspected each year by a shop to make sure it's in good order.

Nope, you didn't hurt anything. Hook it up and go diving.

You only need to avoid pressing the purge button when you gear is not on a tank and underwater. Nothing wrong there.
No problem on the LP hose either. Make sure you screw the hose in tight, other than that you are ready to dive!

Above the water: you can pretty much do what you like as far as pressing buttons and inhaling.

Underwater: even if some water entered passed the poppet seat you still pumped 80 cubic feet of dry air through it during the dive. This should dry it out completely leaving little or no salt residue on metal parts.

Thank you for the advice.

Now, I want to screw the gauge and the LP hose to the first stage. Do I need to use those silicon greese onto the o-ring?

Can you point me some website where I can learn about maintaining (basic care) scuba gears?

Thank you.

You can add a little silicon to the O-ring first, and then tighten the hose to the 1st stage just a little past hand tight with a wrench. The silicon is not mandatory but it is recommended. Make sure your SPG (pressure gauge) goes to your HP port, and inflator hose to a LP port.

You can take a class on basic scuba maintenance, PADI has: Equipment Specialist

Your on the best site right now!
